battery error

When trying to charge my unit the battery lights blinks red 4x with a noticeable pause. The manual states this means standard deviation but I am unsure what that means?

Measure battery volts. Charger may also be dead, open the cover and visually inspect both. Power part and control unit's pins and connections.
