Discussion:
4Y or 5R engine?

Wondering if someone can help me out. I have a 42-3FGC15, SN 10566. The 4X in the model number pertains to engine, according to Toyota the engine could be either a 4Y or a 5R. I am trying to decide which engine I have.

I did change my oil today and to access the OEM filter, I had to turn the wheels sharp and change the filter out via the wheel well in the "right" rear. I believe the 4Y engine has the filter on the "left" side near the distributor, but not sure. (Left and right based on a driver sitting in the driver's seat of forklift)

Can someone tell me if I have a 5R or 4Y via the oil filter location?

Many thanks again! Went ahead and called Toyota Lifts of Houston, gave part counter the model # and serial. After a few minutes waiting on hold, they said it should be a 5R. Will go with that for now.

Update: Got myself the Toyota spec sheet for this machine. Yes, it is a 5R engine in my lift. The 02-3FGC10, a related model, got the smaller 4P engine.

I do not remember exactly how to tell the difference between the 4P and the 5R it has been 20 years since I worked for a Toyota dealer. Try calling your local Toyota dealer with the model and serial number and they can tell you either how to tell or tell you exactly which one it is.

Many thanks for everyone's efforts. Figuring out the specs on these old Toyota lifts is not easy, glad I am doing it in advance of needing to order any parts. If I ever get a good set of docs compiled I will set up a web page with links for everyone.

According to Intella Parts the engine is supposed to be a 4Y or 5R, http://store.intellaliftparts.com/blog/decode-toyota-forklift-model-number/. But I guess it could be a 4P, kinda confusing..

Your truck definitely will not have the 4Y. The did not start using these until the 5 series and yours is a 3 series which had the option of 4P or 5R most likely the 5R.

5R has the filter on the left.

Edit : I meant the 4Y is on the left. Sorry.
