normally the ecm gates circuits with a negative signal, most electrical systems use negative to gate signals with now a days.
If the ecm is seeing a problem in the oil pressure circuit it will kill the negative and shut the engine down to prevent any damage from what it thinks is no oil pressure.
Thanks also would it be that the cluster is no good and would it cause the engine to die? Again when it shuts off the ground circuit is lost I think the ECM is shuting the ground off because of the oil pressure reading it has good oil pressure I did a manual reading thanks for your help Joe
the 166 flashing 3 times is normal, it does this to inform you that the ECM diagnostic routines are functioning correctly.
Like edward says that code 115 indicates oil pressure low
check the oil pressure sender, they are known to cause issues.
Verify the engine has good oil pressure by installing a pressure guage and taking a manual reading.
You can also remove the connector from the sender, use a vom meter and check the sender, crank over the engine with meter leads on the sender in ohms scale and see if it is switching on and off. By default the sender is open with engine not running and closes when the pressure increases after starting the engine. If the sender does not close when engine is running the DTC code will set.
You can also check voltage on the sensor circuit and make sure it is getting the +5v from terminal 37 of the ecm connector plug.
As far as the grounding on the truck, see if it has a ground strap from the engine to the frame, if it does not make one and temporarily ground the engine directly to the frame and see if that changes anything. If it does then make a ground cable and install it.
That's correct it started with 166 3 times than 115 3times and back to 166
more likely,,, the oil pressure sender, (or low oil) but anything is possible.
A complete model and serial number may help getting you better information.
You say you got a coded 115? this (if accurate) shows to be 'low engine lube oil pressure', [however, read on...]
?You are aware these truck's codes repeat 3 times, and then move to the next code, there should have been 'an alert' code that shows that it is flashing codes and this code is the first code of each set, so flashing 3 times a 166 code THEN flashing the 115 code 3 times then repeating back to 166 (etc...) would have been what I expected to see.
Checked ground go engine all good ran a test on the power circuit and found when it dies it loses ground to the whole circuit it must be some safety thing.like I mentioned the temp gauge goes to hot when it runs for five minutes but it is not hot,I took a manual reading and it was fine just wandering if it could be my cluster?
this may sound random, but the first step I would do would be to insure the ground between the engine and frame was good, un screw the bolts and clean off any crud on the lugs and reconnect them. this may not fix anything, but it will eliminate the grounds as a possible concern.
I would also note that the behaviour you describe of the gauges; "the temp gauge goes to hot the oil gauge read low and charging gauge read low", may be the normal start up of this machine, the dash gauges swing all the way one way and then back as part of the start-up
ok my problem on this lift after warm up the temp gauge goes to hot the oil gauge read low and charging gauge read low it shut off and start right back up 30 sec later dies again starts again
If there is one, it will be a black plug with 2 wires in each of 2 rows for a total of 4 plugs, and {when new}, had a cap on the plug that has only 1 wire that loops back into the plug (to keep the dust cap from getting lost). I look for that 1 wire looping back into the plug, and it is usually on the harness, near where the engine/emissions harnesses connect to the truck harness, where the harnesses run over bell housing.
looking directly into the plug connector, you -may- be able to see the markings for a through d plugs to see which pin is which letter.
The IFAK cable is the "can box" cable that is also a USB connection to the computer for the Dealership's proprietary software. The dealership's software looks at everything connected to the 'can' bus [which includes the emissions controller, among others], but the diagnostic connection [that I describe above] only communicates with the Emissions controller.
If you tell us more about the problem that you are hoping to be able to fix with this information, we may be able to better assist you with getting your truck fixed, quicker.
i was told it was a four wire plug a-d
do you know what it looks like?
