Work has begun on a new container terminal in the Cambodian city of Sihanoukville.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Japan’s Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ishibashi Rintaro presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the new 350 m container terminal at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS), according to a Khmer Times report.

The terminal represents phase one of a three-part upgrade of PAS that will facilitate direct entry and exit of goods from Cambodia to ports around the world without the need to transit at regional ports.

“Once the Sihanoukville deep-sea port is completed, the giant ships with a capacity of 60,000 T will be able to dock in our country and the port can receive about 93% of local ships,” says Manet.

Phase one is estimated to increase the port capacity to 350,000 TEUs per year.

Japanese company TOA Corporation will construct the port, supervised by Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultants Global.

Phase one is schedule for completion in 2026.

The USD243 million container terminal and the provision of two mobile harbour cranes are part of the Japanese government’s aid program to Cambodia.
