Port Saint John now boasts six cranesDP World has welcomed the two largest container cranes ever deployed at Canada’s Port Saint John, each with an outreach of 65 m.
Dubai-based logistics solutions provider DP World operates in a 500,000 sqft (46452 sqm) warehouse space at Port Saint John, offering cargo handling services including container cargo handling.
DP World did not disclose the brand of cranes.
The two cranes, which set sail from Port of Virginia in Norfolk, can each span 24 containers wide, enabling them to service vessels exceeding 10,000 TEUs and are expected to be operational in early 2025.
Port Saint John, the largest port in Atlantic Canada by volume, now boasts six quay cranes with DP World bringing in two super post-Panamax cranes in 2107 followed by two post-Panamax cranes in 2023.
Doug Smith, chief executive officer DP World in Canada says of the acquisition: “[The cranes] extended reach and capacity will enable DP World to handle larger vessels, bolstering the port's container throughput and efficiency”.
The arrival of the cranes is part of the port’s USD250 million modernisation project.
Port Saint John chief executive officer Craig Bell Estabrooks adds: "The arrival of two additional cranes marks yet another transformational milestone for our port. Expanding capacity and improving efficiency will be key to delivering further jobs and prosperity for our region."
DP World has been expanding its market footprint having opened new freight forwarding offices in Bogota and Panama in October.
