This week, the US marks its first National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, recognising the 'new' technology and its impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing America's energy security.
Fuel Cell Day will be celebrated on October 8, and we mark the occasion with a special column from John Cococcia, an executive at industry leader Plug Power.
Fuel cells, of course, are now in everyday use around the world, with more than 10,000 units buzzing around distribution centres in the US alone.
And while we're focusing on hydrogen technology, it's obviously not the only alternative fuel source for materials handling at the moment. There is currently lots of movement around lithium-ion batteries and other technologies.
But, importantly, fleet operators now have choice - and the materials handling sector is the beneficiary of ongoing research and development.
The future for forklift power has never been brighter.
