PORTLAND, OREGON, December 12, 2013 Cascade Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of lift truck attachments and related technologies, remains at the forefront of the material handling industry with the design, production and successful implementation of an 18-ton pulp bale clamp to meet the demanding needs of a busy port in Sweden.

The Challenge
Bengt Andersson, Service Manager, for HallandsHamnar, was trying to speed up the process of loading a ship with pulp. This location moves 200,000 tons of pulp per year from the mill in Värö, Sweden, which is sent by train to Varberg and then stored in the warehouse. The pulp is shipped to various locations in Europe, though the main location is the terminal in Terneuzen, Holland. Previously HallandsHamnar had two forklifts equipped with bale clamps that handled 32 bales per load. They would stage the 64 bales to be loaded on the ship by crane. Andersson suggested that if they could get a big enough bale clamp they could move all 64 at one time and load the ship faster.

The Cascade Solution
Andersson worked with Cascade sales representative, Jonas Statin, and Country Manager, Tommy Abrahamsson to see if Cascade could provide the size clamp they needed. The end result of their collaboration was an 18,000 kg pulp bale clamp with middle arm-the largest pulp bale clamp Cascade has ever built.

The Response
Andersson is very pleased with the new clamp and says, "It is working perfectly." In fact, in April 2013 Halland Port in Varberg had a record month, a 14% increase in productivity compared to the previous year. Undoubtedly, the Cascade pulp bale clamp helped contribute to this success.

The Product
Designed for handling large loads of pulp, Cascade's newest bale clamp is both rugged and dependable, and allows for efficient and economical handling of nearly any type of baled product. It provides excellent visibility through and over the top of the frame, making it ideal for loading and unloading trailer or shipping containers.

The Customer
HallandsHamner is a full-service port. Their success is based on their high productivity, level of service and flexibility with the customer; where skilled and dedicated employees and strong partners make the big difference. In January 2013, two historic port companies in Halmstad and Varberg merged to form Halland Ports AB; Europe's newest port. Halland Ports has an unbeatable location between Oslo and Copenhagen, the center of the Nordic Triangle. This, along with proximity to the main European highway and railways, has enabled them to develop into a transport and logistics hub on the Swedish west coast.
