Tasmania's largest transport and logistics provider, Toll Group, has begun operations at its new $A24 million freight terminal, north of Hobart.

The 17,000 sqm facility is in the state's newest freight hub, the Brighton Transport Hub.

Toll MD Brian Kruger says the terminal will benefit the company's customers and the Tasmanian economy through improved domestic and international freight services and fewer trucks coming in and out of central Hobart.

"Relocating to the new hub in Brighton will result in 42 fewer B-Doubles and 100 fewer semi-trailer movements from the city of Hobart each day. It also allows us to increase the amount of freight we can carry via rail. More freight on trains will mean fewer trucks on Tasmanian roads."

The new terminal handles general and refrigerated freight, offers warehousing and distribution services, and provides shipping container storage.

Kruger says the $A24 million investment underpins other key investments Toll is making in the state, including buying next-generation replacement vessels for its Bass Strait shipping service, earmarked for 2018, and redeveloping wharf and rail terminals in Burnie and Launceston.

Forkliftaction's JOB MARKET

It’s the year 2000. You’re in front of a boxy beige desktop waiting for the screeching ramblings of your dial-up to reach its finale. And with web pages loading one image at a time, patience isn’t just a virtue – it’s a requirement!

As clumsy as this early iteration seems now, this technology was the great enabler that allowed Forkliftaction to connect to the industry across the globe.
