Private logistics firm Northline has invested AUD3 million in a new transport and logistics facility for Townsville in Queensland.

The new facility will follow other Northline developments in Sydney, Brisbane and, most recently, Darwin to boost the company's national presence and support its growth.

This brings the investment in new Northline transport and logistics facilities to over AUD75 million in just over two years.

Work on the new Townsville facility has started. It will be completed in late December, creating 2,000 sqm of space under roof on a nearly 5,000 sqm site.

Northline CEO Craige Whitton says the new facility is Northline's fourth new Australian distribution centre in just over two years. "Townsville has been part of the Northline distribution network for more than 12 years and the company's investment represents a vote of confidence in the local economy and supports local jobs."

The Townsville development is being facilitated by industrial developer Gibb Group, which is extending its relationship with Northline, having just completed its Darwin facility.

Gibb development manager Matthew Thiselton says his company "jumped at the opportunity to assist Northline in Townsville when asked".

"While this project builds on our relationship with Northline, it also continues to build our presence in Townsville, having now invested more than AUD15 million into existing assets in the region and some AUD17 million in new projects.

Townsville has a very diversified GDP, a well-established freight network and, like Northline, we also believe in the long-term growth prospects of the region."

Incorporated in 1983, Northline, with 13 Australian branches, is a privately owned and managed Australian company specialising in road and rail freight management services; warehousing and distribution; global freight forwarding and mining, construction, oil and gas logistics.

The new Townsville facility will be located at 696 Ingham Road, Mount Louisa.
