Travis Perkins, the nationwide timber and builders' merchant, has ordered 60 new bbs-tek reversing alarms from Brigade Electronics Plc for exclusive use on its forklift trucks.

Since the merger in 1988 of Travis & Arnold and Sandell Perkins, two public companies which began trading over 100 years ago, Travis Perkins now boasts a network of over 518 outlets throughout the United Kingdom, making it one of the largest builders' merchants in the country.

Travis Perkins Plc offers a range of products to the building trade including timber and forest products, heavy building materials, plumbing and heating and tool hire.

The 60 new 92dB(A) bbs-tek Brigade reversing alarms were bought for use on the company's forklift trucks following successful trials at two separate depots: Vauxhall and Chippenham. Travis Perkins has been using Brigade reversing alarms for the past year and Duncan McLean, Transport Manager at the Northampton Head Office, specified the new bbs-tek units not only to replace older reversing alarms but also to be fitted as a standard requirement on all forklift trucks. This was, as he pointed out, due to "...environmental and noise pollution problems caused by the older, conventional alarms". Mr McLean continued: "After successful trials at a number of our depots throughout the UK, we have found that noise pollution was cut by the bbs-tek reversing alarm to the satisfaction of local residents and neighbours."

The bbs-tek reversing alarm, developed by Brigade using a new and innovative technology known as broadband sound or "white sound", is new to the market. The bbs-tek broadband sound reversing alarm is both directional and localisable, concentrating the sound within the immediate danger zone. This increases people's response to the alarm, and diminishes the chance of its being ignored. More importantly, it also makes the bbs-tek broadband sound reversing alarm safer than an equivalent pure tone alarm, because the latter can usually be heard well outside the danger zone, leading to the risk that people will disregard it - even when in real danger.

Furthermore, the unique and distinctive "shh shh shh" bbs-tek broadband sound 'dissipates' more quickly (with increasing distance) than pure tone at a similar decibel rating, and is heard at lower source sound pressure levels than an equivalent pure tone. There are two main factors in the dramatic reduction in noise nuisance that is now being realised by those companies that have been involved in early trials and installations, thereby cutting complaints from nearby residents.

Brigade offers a complete range of bbs-tek reversing alarms to suit all industries and vehicle types, from the light duty model for vans and forklift trucks, operating at 82dB(A) to the heavy duty model for earthmoving machinery at 107dB(A).

Brigade Electronics was established in 1976 and is market leader in reversing safety systems. It is the only company in the world to provide a complete range of reversing safety systems. The company's reputation is built upon the quality and reliability of both its products and its service and support. Brigade is accredited to BSI-QA and BS EN ISO 9002.

Brigade Electronics plc is based at Brigade Street, Blackheath Village, London SE3 0TW.
