Smart PAL cards boost site safety
Crooklands, United KingdomThe International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) says that all of the Powered Access Licensed-Registrations and Powered Access Licenses (PAL) cards issued for training from 1 January will become smart PAL cards.
The change to machine-readable cards aims to boost site safety as smart PAL Cards may be used to ensure that only trained operators can use aerial work platforms and mast climbing work platforms on site.
The smart PAL card is marked by a wireless icon and has a chip embedded in it. The data stored on the card, such as the operator name, number and categories trained in, is also printed on it, which means that the card can still be used in the conventional way.
PAL cards are issued to operators who successfully complete the IPAF training program after passing a written and a practical test. They are valid for five years and show the machine categories that operators have been trained in.
