Dear gene,
The reason KALMAR is still the best buy for pre-owned machines is not because their quality is everlasting but more because the parts availability globally for their machines are still the best. I am basically talking about the KALMAR DC & DRD models not the DRS which frankly is not KALMAR but SISU modified and acoording to me a very basic and unreliable machine.
the problem with brands like FANTUZZI or PPM is that the support from the OEM for the propreitary parts like Sealkits/some hydraulic components is very poor. otherwise I would personally rate the FANTUZZI reach stackers as the machines which age the least.
As far as the price is concerned, it depends on where you are buying from. In the sense the end user price determines the resale price and the end user price for new units varies from country to country because of the import duties or because of pricing strategy. In india for eg: a new DRS4531 to the end user will be around EURO 300,000 but he also pays a 35% import duty on the same. So when he sells he cant find customers outside India.
A Reach Stacker depreciation is usually double in its first 5 years as compared to the next 5. A 5 year old RS whould be available at 65% whereas a 10 year old will be available at around 50/55 % of the new machine price.
Ideally if you do not have any constraint of the vintage of the RS, then buy DC or DRD model of Kalmar or CS45KM of Fantuzzi approx 7/8 year old. Reliable and extremely easily supported.
Take care....Gopal
Bill,
Bill, Thank you very much for the detailed reply.
I should have been more clear about the "type" of reach stackers I am talking about. I am referring to Container Handling Equipment such as the Kalmar DRS 4531 which is capable of lifting 45 Tons and stacking containers 5 high.
The info you gave is still helpful to me because I am in the market for a used Crown myself.
Dear Gene,
The "used" reach truck stacker market, from
it's beginning,up until now,has never been
in my opinion an overcrowded market.Traditional high lift reach trucks are
still the dominant players in the market. There are some good mgfs. of walkie reach trucks(stackers).BT/Prime Mover,Crown,Raymond all make quality
walkie reach trucks. And still make them I
believe. An important point to keep in mind
Gene,is the type of application the walkie
reach truck is going to be used in?Unlike
it's cousin, the conventional single and dbbl
deep reach truck, the walkie stacker reach
truck is much more limited,it terms of what
it can do for handling your product. The upside to that Gene,is that they are as a rule, much less expensive as well.As to your
question about value,I would say that it
not only depends on number of hours on the truck, but also the environment that
the machine came from, how many duty
cycles it went through day to day,and what
type of maint. did the machine receive?
Those are all major factors in determining
the real value of the machine. If I were in
the market for a good used walkie reach truck.I'd consider any Crown,Raymond or
BT/Prime Mover units first.Barrett,and or
Kalmar would also be good choices as a
back up.In terms of the pricing,I would
say that if you look at the price of a new
walkie stacker which is in the 13,900.00-
16,900.00 range,for a good reconditioned
or low hour truck, you could probably expect
to pay between $11,500.00-12,900.00
range for a solid machine with a good warranty. For an as is type machine, with a
limited,or no warranty,your pricing would
probably be in the 4500.00-6500.00 range.
Another thing to find out before you buy
Gene,is does it come with a battery&charger? If those units are not offered, you'll have to pony up more money
after the purchase,to power your truck.
Good luck on your search Gene!
