Linde (& Baker) H20CT/600 391:
Starter Problems

We have several Linde H20CT/600 391, 4,000 lb. forklifts with VW/BEF engines. Can anyone out there tell me if they have similar vehicles and whether they have issues with starters and/or ring gears? Thanks

Since we had our 391's equipped we haven't had anymore problems. The only new concern with this lift is with the batteries blowing up.

Hi All,

Linde has a STARTER DELAY KIT P/N170560, that when installed will allow the starter drive to fully engage the ring gear before the starter motor starts to spin the engine over (about a 2 second delay).

As I understand this will greatly reduce ring gear wear and starter failure.

Fits 391,392,393 & 394 diesel and LPG trucks

Here is the number to Equipment Depot in Dallas. They were the ones that came up with the solution for Linde. Bill:214-226-4747.

Our dealer placed time delays on the starter circuit, they said per Linde. The starter engages a second or two after the key is turned on. This is to prevent the starter hunting during start up.

The issues continue (replaced another starter last week). We haven't replaced the ring gears, as the cost to do all units is quite high. The suggested modifications are not warranteed by Linde and their quoted cost to make the repairs is more than we are willing to invest. The 4 vehicles are being moved to low-use areas and we now have a collection of rebuilt starters. Thanks

We have eight 391's with less than 1000 hurs and so far we have had 4 starter - ring gear problems. The 350's were so much better. Anyone purchase these to work in dusty areas? How are you preventing the engine compartment from getting dirty?

Hi their is now a mod for all 39x truck starter motors,If you replace any from 391 upto 394 then a new starter is available with 9 teeth instead of 10.You will also need a fitting kit the first time it is done. All new trucks will have the mods fitted.
Hope this helps you all
cheers

Not sure if they are,If the ring gear fails within the standard warrant time/hours think it will be covered if not then you should ask your dealer the question..

With the similar problems that others are having, has Linde offered to correct the ring gear under warranty? Thanks

Yes there is a problem with ring gears on the 39x range this has started to occur since the starter motor was moved to the other side of the bellhousing to allow for better access.

If you contact Linde the original part numbers should change to a tougher ring gear and a starter motor with a fitting kit that will modify the spacing between motor and bellhousing.
I have had a 391 ring gear last 2 months between changes,I fitted the kit and all seems well..
cheers

Thank you for responding. We're very concerned. We've had to replace 1 ring gear but quite a few starters on vehicles that have less than 1500 hrs. Can't seem to see why the starters are failing and the Dealer hasn't offered much help. I would appreciate knowing as much as I can about similar problems others are having and what they've done to correct it. Thanks to anyone who can assist.
