Linde (& Baker) FJD-040:
Baker Won't Start

Hopefully someone has some knowledge that can assist me. Any ideas are appreciated.

Truck won't start: It has been running rough for a few months and then would start and die.

Have done the following work:

New Ignition Coil
New Distributor (pertronix - no points / condenser)
Rebuilt Carb
Set timing to top dead center
Checked compression (holds at 120 equal all cylinders)
It has spark
Firing order is set to 1-3-4-2 based on stamp on head
new seals on valve cover
new seal on intake / exhaust
has good vacuum (*** hand when placed over throat of carb intake)
reversed distributor cap in case top dead center was off
spun distributor during cranking slowly in case top dead center was off
Tried to start with starter spray, choke open / closed, throttle open closed etc
cranks continually but no cough or catch

Great advise - good technique. That did the trick. Turns out timing was off about 15 degrees. Just enough for it not to catch.

Much Appreciated.

Thank you for the reply and the confirmation. Yes I have been going off #1 plug at the rear of the truck.

You are correct that the distributor rotates counter clockwise
I have checked compression and spark, but not at the same time (good idea) I will do that and get back to you.

Just to make sure we're on the same page. #1 is at the back of the forklift and the distributor rotates counter clockwise? Take out the spark plugs and install your compression gauge in #1. Hook up a spark plug to #1 plug wire. Crank motor and see if it is in fact sparking just as the gauge jumps. Then hook up wires 3-4-2 counter clockwise from there.
