Discussion:
Code 51

Hey folks.. we have around 20 e60z's that are all coming up on 10,000 hours and code 51 seems to coming up.

most offen after a battary change.

One guy in the shop thinks its the PTC ( i call it the red advile on the line contactor ) he has had luck cooling them with safeclean and the truck starts again.

The other guy has had luck changing the line contactor.

I think the PTC is failing becasue of the line contactor failing.

Is this a problem any one else has come across?

Hi Madman

You mite fine it to be the battery, it just has to be a little dirty and you can get this issue. We have had this on our units and we just change the battery and take the one that cause the problem and give it a good cleaning. Use a good cleaner /neutralizer

Constant horn blowing will also heat up the capacitor and cause this problem.

hi guys !
the ptc is there to precharge the capacitor inside the controllers (it's there to leak some voltage bypassing the contactors ) capacitor can get empty after a long period of time or after being sucked.... make sure all accesories and key switch is off when replacing batteries... unpluging the battery key switch or accessories on, you *** the capacitor.. plugging back the battery when key is on and the operator on the seat is the best way to get these error code ! hope this help

the current limiter (you call PTC) shouldn,t get hot. it gets damaged by dirty line contact tips. the dirty tips can be caused by old batteries
