If the forklift has rough terrain design capability then manual may offer some operational driver control benefit but in the average work environment of a conventional forklift auto transmission will offer simplicity and reliability.

If you were travelling long distances over rough terrain and hills then definitely manual transmission but for stop-start frequent lifts then automatic else you'll be dog tired by the end of the day!..what place would they be working?
