You might get a hold of Midwest Steering. They have a lot of the older steering gears and components to rebuild.

The worm gear is wore out and the posts are wore as well.
Can your's be fixed? The bearings are available.
It is a worm gear and peg type. It's a 2000# cap straight truck. Serial# P-159369
This sounds like a very old truck to me, something like a K51 the way you have described the steering. It sounds to me like the steering comprises of a steering colume with box and a drop arm that a drag link is fit to the box being of a worm and peg type. If it is like that I think you will have a hard time sorting it as I don't think any parts will be available.
What I'm looking for is the steering unit or gearbox. Inside it has a wormgear on the vertical shaft the steering wheel bolts to that turns the splined shaft that holds the tie rod to the steering wheels. It's like a right angle gearbox.
