Hyster S50XM:
starter nose cone

Hello everyone. I have a propane powered hyster with a 3.0l gm engine in it. This unit has had the nosecone blow off the starter and wipe out the ring gear two or three times in the past 5 years. The first couple times it happened we were using aftermarket starters. We switched to OEM (nosecone looked thicker) and the problem didnt occur for a couple years untill now. We have 4 of these in our fleet all of which backfire occasionally when the operators are on and off the accelerator rapidly in a short period of time, but this is the only one that has had nose cone issues. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am tired of pulling this motor out and want to find the root cause of this problem. Thank You.

most cases ive seen with this problem is that the starter bendix is going to far out and actually where the bendix teeth ends and the rest of the bendix is actually hits the ring gear and ends up grenading because of the torque and speed...

Have a look at this page 2 of Technical Area on the boards for a solution to this issue.

Part number Delay Timer Kit 1465935 should help solve the problem.
