Toyota 8FGCU32:
Starter bendix engauges when shifted to forward

I'm servicing a Toyota that i replaced the electric shift lever assembly last May and now it is doing the same thing. When it's running and shifted into forward , the starter engages. It does not engage in reverse. The new lever is showing the same malfunction as before. Is there a relay or diode that may be defective?
