DTC 143 - Never Crank Synced At Start
Circuit Description
The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is a magnetic transducer mounted on the engine block adjacent to a pulse wheel located on the crankshaft. It determines crankshaft position by monitoring the pulse wheel. The crankshaft position sensor is used to measure engine rpm and its signal is used to synchronize the ignition system.
The ECM must see a valid crankshaft position signal while cranking before it starts. If no signal is present within 4 cranking revolutions, this fault will set.
Bad crank sensor adjustment or just a bad sensor or damaged or faulty wiring most likely.
Sounds like you either have wiring issues or a ground issue. Seen this many times w/engine R & R's.
well here in am again. now it shows a code 143. at least it tried to run once now. what does 143 mean. is it the temp sensor fault? the low water lite is on and i just changed out its sensor but it still comes on now when cranking, and for a little while the engine lite is out but comes on after about 7 revolutions.
ok kev and i got together and compared manuals and both of us are correct hehe
his manual is an older manual though and the ECM at that time did display a code 116 and after looking through my manual it is a newer manual and it says the ECM displays the code 166.
So either someone screwed up during manual composition or there was a initialize code change most likely when they updated the ECM to a newer one and revamped the code structure.
no there was an air gap but remember we just put this motor in and it probally got damaged in the transfer.
If the sensor was damaged i would be asking why???......is there an air gap interference issue with where the sensor picks up its refrence signal....might put a new sensor in just to have the same thing happen....
Well I just pulled the crank sensor and found the end was damaged a little bit and ran an ohm meter on it with a screw driver on the magnet end and the dam thing w or w out the screw driver never opened up it always had between 600 to 800 ohms of resistance no matter if I waved the screw driver in front removed it or stuck it full on the halleffect sensor. Good god I hope that this is finally it.. thanks kevin and swoop
The ECM receives signals from the CAM and CRANK signals to know when to fire the coil,does this truck have theses sensors???
I would start by checking your distributor and seeing if it is timed to the engine......number one cylinder at TDC and distributor rotor at number one spark plug.
as for the sensors....could be an air gap issue with the sensors in the new engine...........could be diffrent refrence markings on either the flywheel or cam gear or where ever the sensors are picking up their reference signal from......could be diffrent cam gear refrence marks....HAVE SEEN THIS ON NISSANS WITH TWO DIFFRENT CAM GEARS AND WRONG ONE INSTALLED ON ENGINE...... Start with the basics i guess....if youve verified that the timing marks on the engine are correct then check distributor timing....check coil to make sure its good......cap and rotor...plugs and wires all GOOD then sensor inputs to ECM...the ecm wont know when to,EXACTLY fire the coil with out the correct signals at the correct time......
Well here we go again. Pull valve cover and verified timing marks and ran a compression test on a room temp 40 degree motor. 90 up to 125. Ran valves and got compression on low cylinder up to 105 which is now in tolerance. Pulled codes again and 166 flashes 3 times and then starts over. What in the **** am I missing? We are turning in to parts replacers....... we replaced the vaporizer awhile ago because I thought it was getting no fuel but won't even run on either. Even tried a new ecu and coil and pickup. I wasn't a real big gm fan before this but now I know why I like the 2.0 and 2.2 Mazda a whole **** of a lot better.
I have fuel and spark for a little while about 15 seconds w key on but then it goes away. And we check the ignition module according to the book it was bad because I had only initial spark from it to start but when checking for the signal from the ecm to make it run we had none. I thought that we some how hooked up some wiring wrong or smashed it but couldn't find any thing. The reason we pull the other motor is number 1 rod brg spun but it still ran. Thanks for the help and I will check for a code after 3 of the 166 if I get nothing it will have to be timing but the marks line up. Also if I remember my helper Correctly. This motor did run initially 2 times.

you're gonna make me direct quote the complete paragraph and this comes straight from hyster online in the H45-65 XM (H177 prefix serial) manual.
and i quote:
Using a Diagnostic Jumper to Diagnose the ECI System
If you do not have access to a laptop computer, it is still possible to access the diagnostic trouble codes stored in the memory of the Spectrum system ECM using a diagnostic jumper and the malfunction indicator lamp. With the key OFF, connect the diagnostic jumper to the DLC located near the ECM. The jumper will connect diagnostic pins A and D. Turn the ignition ON but do not start the vehicle. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will begin to flash.
The MIL displays three digit codes by flashing the first digit, pausing, then flashing the second digit, pausing, and then flashing the third digit. There will be a long pause between codes. For example, a code 143 would be one flash followed by four flashes followed by three flashes.
The MIL will first display a 166 three times. Code 166 indicates that the ECM based diagnostic routines are functioning. Then, any Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in memory will display three times each. The MIL will then start over with the code 166. If the vehicle is started while the diagnostic jumper is in place, the MIL will flash rapidly.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes may be cleared from the system ECM memory by moving the ignition key to the OFF position and removing the (F2) system battery fuse for at least 15 seconds.
NOTE: This will erase all of the memory in the computer including the adaptive learn.
not sure what manual you're looking at
enlighten me please? where are you seeing this 116 at?
but the part that is really confusing is he says it has a GM engine in it and in the GM section there is no option that i can find for a diagnostic jumper, it only shows the 8 prong plug for the OBD scanner and that diagnostic initiate check code is a 12 that flashes up. And the only DTC codes showing are 2 digit codes.
At this point i'm as stumped as he is but i'll keep checking service grams etc to see if i can find anything.
am i missing something here?

SWOOP...that would be code 116 that flashes three times...they are stating that its code 166 that they are getting......
the code 166 is a normal code that flashes
In the ECM diagnostic section of the manual it explains what happens when you first intialize the diagnostic mode.
The MIL will first display a 166 three times. Code 166 indicates that the ECM based diagnostic routines are functioning.
it should flash this code 3 times
then it should flash any error codes if any are active.
3 basic things to verify
1- is it getting fuel?
2- is it spark?
3-is it getting air?
being a new engine sometimes they just don't fire right up out of the box... try squirting some gas into the intake or use ether and spray a small burst into the air filter housing, just enough to see if it will fire off and run.
If you get no response after that then i would start looking for some other problem that might keep it from running.
Sorry I forgot but this is an lp machine and I've rechecked it and it is 166. This dog gone this has been driving me nuts for 3 weeks
