Cat Lift Trucks (& Caterpillar) DP40:
"Kill Switch"

Hello,

I am working on a Diesel DP40, and have some goofy wiring on it. The owner has wired a "kill switch" because he says the "module" quit working correctly, and would not shut the truck off with the key. The kill switch is just a push button switch wired to 12V+ and running to a solenoid on the side of the injection pump. I am not aware of any "module" that is part of this function. He says it was so long ago that he cannot remember what the issue was. Is this 12V supplied by the Key switch normally when turned to the off position? Does anyone have wiring diagrams for this truck? It doesn't seem logical to me that a device made by the manufacturer to shut down the engine would require 12V+ supplied to it, rather, it would normally have the 12v+ removed from it? The serial # of the truck is 3CN90413 if that helps.

Thanks,

Devon

yep edwardt is correct
these trucks have an engine stop timer module mounted under the dash somewhere on the kickpanel or underneath a cover.
The manual shows it directly underneath the steering column mounted on the firewall. But you know how some of these pictures are, they just give you a general location, sometimes they arent exactly where they show in the book.

most the DP40s I have seen have a time delay module, that actually supplies a b+ to a solenoid for a few seconds as the key is turned off, this pulls a solenoid to kill the motor, which releases after the motor has died and oil pressure went down and alt out put ended. the normal spring loaded "at rest" state is with the motor linkage in the run position, and the energized solenoid pull the linkage to shut off the motor.
