Hyster H50F oil level in bell housing

This is a automatic transmission with the convertor housing that has oil in it and uses a sealed Delco starter. The trans and hydraulic use the same oil. How high should the oil level be in there? The starter develops a leak because the oil level is above where the starter mounts. When you pull the starter off about 3 quarts pour out. I know the starter is sealed but I don't think the oil level should be way up above the mounting hole, which is low on the bell housing. I don't think the Delco sealed starter were intended to seal like that, just to seal splashing oil that is at a level lower than the mount point. I don't see any sump suction hose on the bottom of the housing. Any ideas on this? Thanks.

if you remove the top cover on the bellhousing 5/16 bolts inside you will see a casting tube assembly with two more 5/16 bolts that is the scavenging tube. a tin ring fits around the flywheel that collects the oil by centrifical force and returns it.if your housing is full of oil you will have to pull the engine ti kix the problem. a sealed starter will seal any amount of oil

Hi, This method was long gone by the XL series trucks. Your problem is probably a pump seal leaking into the housing.

That is the tube, on the inside is the pickup and the ring is part of the converter.

Mine has that same fitting and hose, and I blew through them to make sure they were unrestricted...

mrfixit, Take the top converter cover off and see if the scavenging tube may be cracked or broken or the scavenging ring has a problem. That is the only reason I can think of for high oil level in the converter housing. Bill
