Discussion:
Genie charger fault

Hi

Anybody able to help with a Genie battery charger that is flashing a fault code?

Its a Genie HB 600 - 24B charger
Genie part number on the charger is 96211 & its made by Signet systems inc.

Plug the charger in to the mains & it goes through its start up disco with the led's on the front.

You can then hear a relay click inside the charger for a second then it clicks off & the charger then beeps, the 50% 75% & 100% leds on the front flash together 8 times.

The charger then just keeps repeating this cycle of relay clicking in then out & 8 flashes of the leds.

Checked the red & black output leads from the charger, there intact.
I cant see a fuse on the charger unless its inside the unit, I havent had the top of yet.

So, can anyone tell me what error 8 flashes is please?

Cheers in advance

It's actually just a charger manual. Though, it is provided by Genie. I was mostly just providing the info for reference for those who are searching by charger model number instead of by machine.

FYI...
the genie service manuals for the machines that have these chargers have all the same information, that is probably where it led you to anyways. ;o)

I figured that I would let everyone know that I found a manual for these chargers from Genie. So, I thought I would help everyone find it for reference to this thread (blink codes are on page 5):

Go to google and search these words: (genie 85460 pdf)

It is for the HB150-12, but the flash codes are the same.

What i used to do all day now takes me all day to do.
Customer sourced the gel batteries, I just fitted them to the machine then adjusted the charger by cutting the yellow loop wire to stick it in GEL mode.

All I remember is the batteries where LUCAS branded.

Lucas = the prince of darkness.

That's an old joke in the UK, have a Google for Lucas prince of darkness, a lot of it is true.

Operators used to use the scissor lift for 30 minutes then put it back on charge, this just ruined 2 complete sets of lead acid batteries & 1 charger.

Company bought a new charger & we made them get a set of gel batteries, the gel batteries have slightly less running time then lead acid batteries BUT the gel batteries are much more tolerant of owner neglect unlike the lead acid batteries.

Scissor lift now runs for several hours on a full charge plus there is no need to top the batteries up, not that the operators ever bothered with doing that before anyway.

Life is too short to be boring
New charger is working fine, the scissor lift is also running gel batteries now to cut down on the operator abuse.

Just had to cut the yellow wire loop on back of charger to change it in to gel battery mode.

A new charger from TVH was cheap enough.

I dismantled the old charger & it was basically beyond repair / toasted.

Hi, are you still actively repairing these chargers?
is there a service manual available or just a schematic?

Life is too short to be boring
we have seen over 30 of the HB600 /Signet 92611 over the last 3 years from just one Volvo Rents facility. 90% were repairable.

how can I help you?

an ounce of application is worth a ton of abstraction
Had a look today & after removing the cover of the charger I found the pcb inside is burnt out, smells toasted.
There isnt going to be no chance of repairing this one cheaply ha ha

Up to the fleet manager now to see what the next step it.

Either a replacement onboard Genie charger OR see if there is a suitable 24 volt up to 20 amp output charger in the systems somewhere we could use instead.

yes this may be true that there is an internal fault, i believe i did indicate this in my previous post. The main reason suggested replacing the charger instead of fixing it is that repairing a charger such as this in most cases costs more in parts and labor than it would to just replace it.
I've been down this road more than once with these things.
Its faster this way, more cost effective and puts any warranty and liability back on the new part itself instead of you.

Admin,
complaint? i surely hope they hit the report button by accident as there is nothing to complain about i hope. If trying to help someone is bad then i'll just leave.

Posted by Admin......an unknown reader sent this comment but sent it as a complaint rather than a post.............chargers for electric scissors genie, are usually tight, but part of connection to the mains is usually sulfated, were it not that the problem, it is easier to detect a voltage charger inappropriate batteries, which are usually 4 of 225 h, at the time of applying voltage, if any is referred to the chassis or circuit, the charger switches off the relay that leads inside. Observe with a multimeter if you hear when entering the relay, increases the voltage of the batteries, if not so, is part of the printed circuit of the charger into disrepair. I use a translator to post, I hope to express myself clearly. A greeting.

i have ran into this problem before with the genie charger
in the genie charger manual it does not list a 8 blink code, it only goes up to a 4 blink code as you describe.
But the problem is an internal fault in the charger start circuit. As you said it goes through its self check and then the relay clicking is when it goes into charge mode. Apparently there is a fault with the transformer or it could even be detecting a battery issue. If you have checked the batteries and ruled out those then the only avenue you have is to replace the charger itself. Thats what i wound up doing and it fixed the problem.
I never did find out what the 8 blinks meant though.

i did check on genie's site though and there is no genie model like you described "HB600"? and the part number came up bad too. Are you sure on this information about the machine? This is the information off of the dataplate? NOT the decals on the machine but the dataplate information.
Model Number?
Serial number?
mfg date?
revision code if there is one?

???
