Can anyone tell me what a code 57 indicates on this model Toyota reach truck?

Mine's showing the same. When I move the control handle a tad bit it will take it out of this code.

Is there a permanent fix for this?

"Unicarriers - it would have to be for a dual fuel unit also. Usually a bad cam or crankshaft sensor will throw a E-27 or a E-28 code on the dash panel... If it does not light up and the bulb is bad then it will not start also."
