Discussion:
7FGU35, 4.3 Ignition problems

Hello All
We have a customer about an hours drive away. He called today and was not starting. My mechanic found the cap very corroded, I got him to pick up a new one locally and install which solved the problem. We had 10" plus of rain over the weekend and Labor day so I'm sure the moisture helped cause the problem.
Here is the dilemma. As memory serves me- this is the 4th cap and rotor in the last couple of years. Three months ago I made a service call for running poor and replaced the cap and rotor with the best quality the Auto Zone offered. (this is the "crab" cap). Everyone in the states knows that these are not the best quality parts- but in the area where the customer is- it is the only choice.
I am going to pick up some original Delco caps and rotors to stock our vans with, but I still feel there is more to this. Any ideas??

I had this problem once, and it turned out to be that the cap screws were not pulling the dist cap down all the way.

Thanks for the advice. I talked with my tech this morning and he showed me the "installation instructions" and excessive corrosion could be caused be plugged vents in the distributor. Turns out the two breather screens at the bottom of distributor were plugged. He cleaned these. We will see if this helps.

What is condition of pick-up coil and internals of distributor, ignition module etc. is this unit in a high use and moisture rich enviroment? Would advise complete tune up wires, cap, rotor, and pick up coil as it may have corrosion affecting inside of distributor. Worked on many but never had to replace as frequently as you.

Fact of the week
The dot-com bubble, a period of large and rapid investments in internet-based companies, peaked in 2000 and saw the Nasdaq Composite index rise by 579%. Then the bubble imploded. As the value of tech stocks plummeted, cash-strapped internet start-ups became worthless and collapsed.
