Logistics and freight forwarding company Toll Group is introducing AI-powered pedestrian alert systems on its forklifts, rolling out the extra safety precaution on its forklifts at its Tullamarine health care facility.

In a statement Toll explains the introduction of the pedestrian alert systems is part of a broader effort to “enhance safety across the company's operations and reduce the risk of pedestrian-related incidents”.

The safety kits have been supplied by RCT and use AI to monitor pedestrian traffic around forklifts. 

“The technology sets a predetermined safe distance between the forklift and nearby pedestrians,” Toll explains. “If this distance is breached, the system alerts the driver and automatically reduces the forklift's speed to prevent potential collisions.

Toll Group’s global MHE fleet manager Neil Walters adds: “Currently, we are rolling out these AI-powered kits on all new orders and have the first three sites installed within some of our healthcare sites and at Toll Group’s state-of-the-art Tullamarine facility, with an additional 200 kits scheduled for delivery by early 2025 across the network.

“Toll’s approach includes both upgrading existing forklifts with these systems and acquiring new equipment that comes pre-installed with the technology’.”

Toll explains the rollout is the start of a plan to equip the company’s global fleet with the pedestrian alert system.

Toll Group is an Australian registered company owned by Japan Post. The company operates at 500 sites globally including Australia, Africa, the Middle East and the United States, with a workforce of more than 16,000.
