Owners and users of work equipment have even greater access to Thorough Examination services following a rise in CFTS accreditations last year.

The scheme recently added dozens more locations to its growing nationwide network of certified providers so users of forklifts and agricultural equipment anywhere in the UK can easily find a local accredited examiner.

“In 2021, we welcomed 47 new Thorough Examination providers, representing a 7% increase in UK membership in just one year,” says CFTS chairman Geoff Martin. “We also increased the number of providers in Ireland by 38%.

“Indeed, in the past year, CFTS examiners conducted over 90,000 Thorough Examinations of work equipment — an 11% increase on 2020.”

“That huge growth in market demand is the direct result of ever more companies realising the advantages of having examinations delivered by an independently accredited provider. They appreciate the benefits they derive from the technical support delivered by CFTS in ensuring our members are fully up to date,” he says.

Martin adds that it is imperative that Thorough Examinations are only conducted by a Competent Person with the relevant, practical knowledge of the equipment.

“Our members must undergo regular refresher training, so by choosing CFTS, you can be sure that the examiner has the skills and understanding to inspect equipment correctly.”

CFTS inspections look at the entire truck in line with LOLER and PUWER regulations, to ensure that equipment is safe to use and in good working condition. Thorough Examinations are a legal obligation and must be conducted at least once every 12 months, or possibly more frequently depending on the truck type and its use.

CFTS was created in 2004 by the British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) and the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), which later combined to form UKMHA.
