FACT OF THE WEEK
Caffeine is the coffee plant's natural defence mechanism protecting it from pests and competing plants. The bitter-tasting caffeine is toxic to many insects when consumed in large doses. The insect's nervous system stops producing essential enzymes causing paralysis and eventual death. The highest concentration of caffeine is stored in the plant's seeds (the coffee beans).
