What's in a name? This week's article about French equipment maker Gaussin is a reminder about how many businesses in our industry still carry the names of their founders and current management.
In attachments, we have Kaup, Vetter and Meijer. Lord Bamford contributes the 'B' to JCB and there are still several Liebherrs in leadership positions at Liebherr. And while there are no Moffetts at Moffett, the founder and his son are still very active in the industry - albeit in other businesses.
Of course, in dealerships and equipment retail, there are many businesses named after the founders and a large number are still family-owned or at least controlled by descendants of the founders.
Putting your name to your business is probably the ultimate embodiment of professional responsibility. There's no hiding when each product has your identity emblazoned all over it.
And while most founders would be proud of the achievements of those who come after them, it must be quite challenging to have to live up to the reputations which have developed around the brand identities. So, it's gratifying to report on ongoing achievements in an industry where reputation means so much.
