This week’s Safety First column raises an interesting point: we’re all responsible for forklift safety.
Safety is not a set-and-forget activity which ends when the employer settles the account for an employee training session.
Organisations clearly have a responsibility to maintain a safe working environment and, unfortunately, no-one can rely on equipment operators’ intentions to “do the right thing”.
Accidents happen. Workers become fatigued or just bored. Systems are taken for granted. Deadline pressures lead to short cuts.
The fact remains that safety requires ongoing vigilance, from the shop floor to the board table.
Safety is everyone’s concern.
