This week’s coverage of Northland Industrial Truck Co Inc’s expansion seems to be part of a trend. Almost weekly, we read about US dealerships expanding and taking on new brands. It looks like the big are getting bigger, with more brands, more locations and more offerings.
On the one hand, clearly this consolidation brings economies of scale. It also brings wider choice to consumers. But there are also losers in the shake-up - and these include the small, independent dealers who face mammoth competitors, and, to some extent, customers whose choice is limited. When all the major brands are under a single roof, it’s almost impossible to shop around for a better deal.
Overall, though, consolidation must surely be adding to the professionalism of forklift retailing and ensuring that businesses are stronger, more robust and able to withstand the ups and downs of the economy.

"Online training is just for theory part and for attaining the basic knowledge about the loading instructions and allowances. But I think you also have to give the practical training, just like the driving test to get the valid forklifter's licence.".

"The last thing we're supposed to do is actually turn a wrench. Electronics is the wave of the future- it can fix everything! Before long the lift will diagnose itself, send a message to the dealer on parts needed. Your job will be eliminated (techs cost too much), a lower level position will be created to just install parts - no diag knowledge needed. But of course, they'll carry the ipad, iphone & laptop- all in the name of progress ".
bbforks, United States
"If you don't get engineers on the same or similar money, they will simply leave and there is a lot of experience within the Barlow ranks, resentment can manifest into a big problem, to the point were it can be very destructive, we need everyone singing from the same hymn sheet.".
