Is automation the way forward? The growth of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) suggests that there are huge advantages in replacing manpower with technology. There’s a lot to be said for a forklift that turns up for work everyday, come rain or shine; never loses concentration; requires no meal breaks and doesn’t need constant reassurance or supervision.
However, as we read in this week’s special feature, AGVs aren’t for everyone or for all applications. Of course, cost is a factor, and AGVs are still more costly than conventional machines. And then there’s the need for guidance systems and programming.
At the end of the day, materials handling is a human hands-on activity - but the nature of the human involvement will no doubt change over time. We’ll be watching with interest.
