JCB profit hikes 100 per cent ![]() ROCESTER, United Kingdom The year 2005 was the most successful in telehandler manufacturer JCB’s 60-year-history, setting new records. Machine production, sales turnover and profit reached “all-time highs”, a JCB statement said. JCB’s pre-tax profit for 2005 totalled GBP110 million (USD203 million), double the figure for 2004. Global production exceeded 45,000 machines, up 21 per cent on 2004. Sales turnover jumped to GBP1.42 billion (USD2.62 billion), up 23 per cent and JCB’s global market share moved from 8.6 per cent to 9.6 per cent. John Patterson, JCB managing director and CEO, said the company would grow significantly in the next five years. “In 2001 we manufactured 120 different products. We have now more than doubled the models offered to 257,” he said. Increased production volume has seen a rise in JCB employees. More than 600 new jobs were created in 2005, 400 of which were UK-based. Today, about 6,300 people work for JCB. In 2005 there were “huge increases” in production of JCB’s fuel-efficient diesel engine, manufactured at JCB Power Systems, in Foston, Derbyshire. The engine was launched in November 2004. The acquisition of Vibromax, Germany, in July 2005, took JCB into the compaction equipment market (Forkliftaction.com News #218). A second JCB plant in India has been completed, where excavators will be manufactured. (Forkliftaction.com News #239). JCB’s first Chinese factory in Shanghai has been completed and will begin producing backhoe loaders and midi excavators in October (Forkliftaction.com News #201). JCB now has 17 plants on four continents: 10 in the UK, three in India and others in the USA, Brazil, China and Germany. According to JCB, the company moved from fifth to fourth place in world rankings for construction equipment manufacturers by sales volume. It claims to have retained the number one position in the backhoe loader market. Production starts in 2007 of high-speed backhoe loaders, worth USD140 million, ordered by the US Army last year. ![]() Konecranes acquires 100 per cent of MMH HYVINKÄÄ, Finland KCI Konecranes has raised its sales growth forecast for 2006 to more than 35 per cent after taking full ownership of MMH Holdings Inc, owner of US-based Morris Materials Handling Inc. Silbermann was speaking at a preview of the company’s new electric counterbalanced forklift, attended by 40 trade press journalists from across Europe. He said Linde was targeting a bigger share of growth in Asian and North American markets. Managers of Linde’s nine sales regions had been assigned larger responsibilities for their territories and Linde was taking steps to identify customer requirements for forklifts, based on market analysis feedback. The European market would set the tone for forklift design but Silbermann said “thinking local” would play a stronger role in its future product range. At CeMAT, in Hannover, last October, Silbermann told Forkliftaction.com News Linde lacked fleet and brand position in North America. Linde’s share in the US market was below five per cent. “The US market is estimated at 200,000 units for 2006 … we must meet US specifications and be present in the field.” (Forkliftaction.com News #231) A new electric counterbalanced forklift, scheduled for a European launch within months, was touted as Linde’s “most important truck release this year” at the press preview. The E12 to E20 range, with load capacities from 1,200kg to 2,000kg, was 80 per cent re-engineered and redesigned, a Linde statement said. “That has nothing to do with face lifting,” Harald Wozniak, head of international marketing for Linde Material Handling, said. He would not say more, except that the forklift had a novel “energy management system”. The new forklift was 3-1/2 years in development. It was being promoted with the slogan ‘Enter the E-zone’, to emphasise it was “a new league in its product segment”. Dealers in Germany would accept the first orders for the forklifts in September. ![]() Baoli gets an agent down under ![]() MELBOURNE, Australia A Chinese materials handling company has become the Australian agent for Chinese-manufactured Baoli Forklifts. Alpha Warehouse Solutions, which trades as Alpha Racking, has established a head office in Melbourne, Victoria. Jiangsu Baoli Group Company Ltd's 2004 sales totaled USD72 million, and it has more than 2,500 staff in four factories across China. The main factory in Ningbo has added Australia to its shipping directory. Alpha’s Australian sales & development manager Jennifer Carey said the Baoli brand had received “a huge response” at the Matex exhibition in Sydney (Forkliftaction.com News #263). “Chinese goods usually get a mixed response but people have been very surprised and have recognised the well-known, well-designed quality parts, that we’re on the money, and have demonstrated our willingness to do packages,” she said. Ms Carey said although forklifts were not Alpha’s core business in Australia, that created an advantage over Australian competitors. “Because forklifts are a small part of the business, we can keep prices down and offer them as part of a package of warehouse solutions,” she said. Apart from Baoli forklifts, Alpha’s product range included fully adjustable, steel pallet and cantilever racking. The Baoli range includes 1.5 tonne to seven tonne forklifts. They are Italian designed, have Mitsubishi motors, Impco gas conversions and Cascade attachments. Alpha has warehouses in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Director Paul Athana said Alpha was keen to move quickly to consolidate the business across Australia. It planned to have distributors in every state and be fully operational before the end of September. ![]() Popular Discussion Forums revamped! ![]() ![]() Forkliftaction.com members are the experts and we are privileged to host the Discussion Forums where many professionals have shared their expertise. Forklift used to bring down neighbour’s fence CAPE CORAL, FL, United States A man rented a forklift to demolish his neighbour’s fence because he couldn’t get his boat into his backyard. A Cape Coral ordinance required boats to be stored off the street, usually in backyards. Tim Trimble, 53, had racked up USD63,450 in fines for the code violation for more than two years. Despite Trimble’s disregard for the city ordinance, he dismantled neighbour Rosario Castro’s fence using a Bobcat forklift last week, The News-Press reported. He now faces criminal mischief charges. The report said Trimble and Castro had had a contentious relationship for two years. Castro’s son, Hector, called police when he saw Trimble ripping up the fence, concrete footings and sprinklers with the Bobcat. Trimble was reportedly a regular at Cape Coral council meetings, often bringing long lists of civic complaints. He claimed he was arrested to halt his attendance at council meetings.
