MANUTENTION GOES TRIENNIAL PARIS, France Three fairs, three
cities, taking turns every three years. The European
fair calendar for forklifts is now in
synch.
Organisers of Salon du Manutention, part
of Europenne de la Logistique, have changed the shows
biennial cycle to fit in with the IMHX and CeMAT shows.
The next Manutention will be in the second half of 2006,
after IMHX in Birmingham, United Kingdom, (March 2 to 4,
2004) and CeMAT in Hannover, Germany, (October 11 to 15,
2005).
Europenne de la Logistique commissaire
gnrale Soline Sommers said forklift manufacturers had
requested the cycle change after CeMAT changed to a
three-year cycle after last years show. IMHX, formerly
a biennial event, also became a triennial show late last
year.
Ms Sommers said forklifts comprised 40
percent of the 70,000 square metres of exhibition space
at the Paris show. More than 40,000 visitors attended
this years show, held from March 11 to 14. It enjoyed
strong regional patronage, but foreign exhibitors grew,
commanding 18 percent of this years exhibits, double
the figure from the 1999 show. Spanish companies,
including Tecna and AUSA, took up about 1200 square
metres, 10 times more than at the 2001
show.
Innovations at the show included: ~ BT
showed its three-directional Vector C15
combi-reachtruck; ~ Daewoo presented a two-tonne
electric three-wheeler in its B18T series and the
seven-tonne G60S-2; ~ Hyster launched a four-wheel
J2.00-3.2XM ACX electro-truck; ~ Still featured its
new R20 15I electric 3-wheeler (ASM-technology) and
thermal machines (D25 30 and G25 30); ~ Toyota
launched a 7FBEF 48-volt three-wheeler: and ~
Jungheinrich equipped its compact electric forklifts in
the EFG-DF series with asynchronous
AC-motors.

MANUTENTION: LINDE A NO-SHOW PARIS, France Of the several hundred
colourful exhibits at this months Manutention show in
Paris, Linde, the worlds biggest forklift producer, was
not represented.
Christian Sauzin, marketing
manager for Fenwick Linde in France, told
Forkliftaction.com News the company could not justify
the expense.
We were (there) in 1997 and 2001,
he said, but Lindes decision was based on
profitability and cost per contact.
We have
a global awareness of 98 percent, so there is no need
for additional visibility. Our sales organisation is the
biggest in the field, with more than 2000 people, Mr
Sauzin said.
Linde visited 20 locations across
France during a roadshow organised to launch its H20/25
forklift at the end of 2002.
We received close
to 3000 customers in our branches and dealerships (from
the roadshow). It is more, in terms of quality and
quantity, than we can expect of a fair in Paris, with
far better cost per contact, Mr Sauzin
said.
He said Fenwick Linde would probably
exhibit at the 2006 show.

FORKLIFTACTION.COM LAUNCHES MATERIALS HANDLING
INDEX BRISBANE,
Australia Forkliftaction.com has entered the
pre-launch phase of its next project, the Materials
Handling Index (MHI), a searchable directory of the
worlds materials handling suppliers, manufacturers,
dealers and related service companies.
The MHI
(www.forkliftaction.com/directory)
contains contact details for more than 8,000 companies
around the world, and is the product of years of
research, says research manager Rodger
Lamb.
Most of the information was gathered by
trawling through materials handling websites over the
past three years, or drawing on Forkliftaction.coms
membership base, he said.
However, before the
MHI is released to the broader business community, we
are hoping all readers of Forkliftaction.com News will
check details of their own companies in the directory
(www.forkliftaction.com/directory/are_you_listed.asp)
and alert us if their details are incorrect or
missing.
The MHI would be useful for fleet
managers and forklift buyers looking for support or
sales information in their region or globally, and it
was important correct, current information was
available.
A lot of companies centrally manage
purchases for outlying branches, so the MHI will be a
great tool for locating materials handling companies in
other world regions too, Mr Lamb said.
The Are
You Listed search is a simple way to check if a company
is included in the MHI. Users need only enter their
details and search to determine if weve missed them
out, or if our information is out-dated. If so, I urge
them to contact me on research@forkliftaction.com
to update or add their
information.
Forkliftaction.com marketing
consultant Penryn Maddrell said all companies were
listed in the MHI free, but companies could make their
advertising stand out by buying a Featured Listing in
the directory.
Some searches will return
hundreds of companies from the MHI, but companies can
ensure their contact details appear at the top of the
list through a Featured Listing, she
said.
Forkliftaction.com is the worlds busiest
materials handling website. With more than 10,000
visitors each month, the company has seen exponential
growth since its launch in July 2000.

BT SECURES KELLOGGS CONTRACT MANCHESTER, United Kingdom Cereals
producer Kellogg's has struck a supply deal with BT
Rolatruc to manage all its materials handling
needs.
BT Rolatruc staff now manage all materials
handling at Kellogg's operations in Trafford Park,
Manchester, and Wrexham, North Wales. The value of the
contract has not been released.
BT Rolatruc
equipment is used throughout the production process.
Nuts and raisins are handled by forklift and all
packaging materials are palletised. Hand pallet trucks,
powered pallet trucks and powered stackers are also
used.
BT account manager Graham Wilkinson said
the company took on the Kelloggs forklift maintenance
program in 1999 as a cost-saving initiative, and later
began a buy-back and rental arrangement to assume
responsibility for downtime and performance.
We
then set about revising the fleet, replacing the oldest
equipment, and cutting redundancy by introducing more
reliable trucks. The fleet is now about 50 trucks,
rather than 90," he said.

**FORK TALK** MIXED FORTUNES FOR UK FORKLIFT
MARKET ALTON, United Kingdom The Fork Lift
Truck Association's (FLTA) new market analysis report
shows modest but clear indications of increased demand
for new forklifts, but less grounds for optimism in
other areas.
Figures for the third quarter of
2002, based on a compilation of FLTA members' reports,
showed improvements in new equipment sales and casual
hire. Profit margins on new equipment also increased
slightly. But used truck sales, volumes and margins
declined.
The FLTA said replacement of large
fleets in the contract hire sector, and high levels of
consumer spending, were helping ensure demand for
materials handling equipment would remain
stable.
"With FLTA members accounting for 90
percent of forklifts sold or hired in the UK, the
figures they produce make these quarterly surveys very
accurate guides to market trends," said FLTA chairman
Brian Warbrick.
"Bearing this in mind, the
current results should give cause for cautious optimism
in the industry."

**FORK TALK** AITA FOCUSES ON SAFETY KINGSTON, Australia The Australian
Industrial Truck Association (AITA) has highlighted
concerns over forklift safety at its annual general
meeting.
AITA president Paul Bennett, of BT
Lifttrucks Pty Ltd, said a report by workers
compensation authority Worksafe Victoria showed half the
people killed in forklift accidents were pedestrians
struck or crushed by forklifts or their loads.
Mr
Bennett said a forklift safety study by Melbourne-based
Monash University was nearing completion, and a safety
seminar program launched by Worksafe this year was proof
the industry was developing a better attitude to
forklift safety.
The AITA elections were held
during the meeting. Mr Bennett was returned as
president, Bernie Whelan (Crown Equipment Pty Ltd) was
elected vice-president and Mark Fritzen (Nacco Materials
Handling Group) was re-elected chairman of the AITA
engineering committee.

B&B LAUNCHES PAPERTECH PACKAGE BERKSHIRE, United Kingdom B&B
Attachments has launched PaperTech, a new concept in
paper handling which encompasses technical support and
advice; maintenance and a range of quality paper roll
clamps.
Developed in conjunction with the paper
industry, the PaperTech roll clamps have been designed
for in-built reliability, low maintenance, high
performance and long life, said B&B managing
director Mike Barton.
For some time we have been
aware the paper industry has been looking for a new
approach to paper handling. We have developed PaperTech
to meet industry demands by including quality products,
service, support and maintenance in a complete package,
he said.
PaperTech models are available in
standard, split arm and tissue configurations, and all
are offered as rotating, tippling and rotating tippling
models. The range has capacities from 1200kg to 12
tonnes. Standard roll ranges include 1300mm, 1600mm and
1800mm.
Mindful that wear and tear is a major
factor in paper handling, B&B has fitted all
PaperTech models with pad protectors to avoid damage to
contact pad edges when handling vertical reels. The pad
pivot hinge is protected with wear strips on the
underside of the short arm and a pad spring system
ensures the pad is kept in position when picking up
reels.

KONECRANES RTGS FOR PORT OF SAVANNAH SAVANNAH, United States The Georgia
Ports Authority (GPA) and Konecranes VLC, the very large
cranes arm of the Konecranes Group, have closed a
contract for delivery of six Konecranes rubber-tyred
gantry (RTG) cranes to the Port of Savannah.
The
value of the contract has not been released. Delivery is
due in September. KCI Koneports Americas, KCI
Konecranes's north American port maintenance services
organisation, will provide maintenance and technical
support for the cranes.
Konecranes VLC vice
president (new cranes) Ilpo Hakala said GPA was a
first-class organisation experiencing fast growth in its
terminal operations and we are happy to meet its
technology expectations to accommodate further
growth.
The 16-wheel RTGs are equipped with KCI
Konecraness sway prevention and fine positioning
systems. All features are electromechanical, with no
hydraulics involved. The cranes will be manufactured in
Europe and erected on-site in Savannah.
Mr Hakala
said RTG orders in the last four months reflected the
strength of KCI Konecranes's technology and service
concept.
KCI Konecranes, headquartered in
Hyvink, Finland, specialises in overhead lifting
solutions and maintenance services. In 2002, group sales
totalled EUR714 million (USD764.2 million). The company
has more than 4,400 employees in 34 countries.

POLICE CHIEF OUSTED OVER MISSING
FORKLIFT FORKS TOWNSHIP, United States Forks
Township has suspended its police chief, Leon Fisher,
over allegations he used a missing forklift at his
home.
The Pennsylvania Department of General
Services, which sold the forklift for $200 under a
program allowing municipalities to buy federal surplus
at low prices, brought the allegations to the attention
of the township, according to a report in the Allentown
Morning Call.
Under the program, equipment sold
must be used by a government entity, not individuals.
Forks Township was suspended from the program after the
forklift, purchased originally for spare parts, was
allegedly found in use at Mr Fishers home.
