2. NEW TELEHANDLER HITS THE WORLD STAGE
THIENE, Italy
French platform manufacturer Pinguely-Haulotte has partnered with Breganze, Italy-based agricultural manufacturer Faresin to produce a new range of telehandlers.

Faresin Haulotte Spa, to be headquartered in Thiene, Italy, will be 60-40 percent owned by Faresin and Pinguely-Haulotte respectively, and gives the companies a platform to enter the EUR2 billion (USD2.15 billion) telehandler market.

Faresin-Haulotte aims to command 10 percent of the world market in five years, which means taking sales from entrenched players like JCB, Terex, JLG and Manitou.

The Top Lift range, to be launched worldwide early this year, will be powered by an Iveco 79.5 kW four-cylinder turbo diesel. The range will feature lift heights from 7.3 metres to 17 metres, and have varying capacities from three to four tonnes.

The range will be available with options, including side shift, a bucket, transverse hydraulic chassis levelling and closed-circuit video control.

Established in 1970, Faresin manufactures and exports agricultural machinery, components for concrete form work and telescopic handlers.

Pinguely-Haulotte, based in LHorme, France, produces vertical mast platforms, scissor platforms, and articulated and telescopic jib platforms. The company achieved EUR206.8 million (USD222.1 million) in sales in 2002.

4. ACQUISITIONS CREATE TEXAN MEGA-DEALER
WACO, United States
Equipment Depot has acquired two dealerships, Clarklift of Fort Worth and Powr-Lift of Dallas, to become one of the largest materials handling companies in Texas.

Equipment Depot now has more than 450 employees, including 240 service technicians, seven facilities, and annual revenue of more than USD100 million. The acquisition price was not released.

Former owners Vern Bailey (Clarklift) and Mel Robinson (Powr-Lift) would continue to manage the acquired companies, an Equipment Depot statement said.

Clarklift, founded in 1979, was dealing in Clark, Mitsubishi and Linde forklifts, and Mustang skid-steers. Powr-Lift represented Clark, Drexel and Linde forklifts.

"These acquisitions extend our reach in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, one of the top forklift markets in the USA," said Equipment Depot president Don Moes. "We will now have more than 10,000 forklifts under routine service contracts and 875 forklifts in our short-term rental fleets."

Equipment Depot, founded in 1975 as Central Texas Clarklift, is a dealer for Caterpillar, Clark, Daewoo, Drexel, Linde and Mitsubishi forklifts, and Mobile pallet jacks.

LOS ANGELES, United States
What do you do when an 8,000 pound (3.6 tonnes) female in her mid-40s gets stuck in a pond?

That was the dilemma facing the Los Angeles Fire Department when Tara, an elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo, found herself unable to stand up after lying down in a pond on February 7.
