1. SALES DOWN, PROFITS UP AT JUNGHEINRICH
HAMBURG, Germany
Jungheinrich AG held up well in the third quarter of 2002 despite difficult economic conditions, posting a higher return on sales and higher net income, according to the companys latest report.

In the third quarter, which ended on October 31, Jungheinrich achieved sales of EUR360 million (USD359.86 million) which, despite being down on the EUR378 million (USD377.85 million) posted in the third quarter of 2001, was three percent higher than the second quarter this year.

Total sales, after nine months, were down seven percent at EUR1.06 billion (USD1.06 billion) compared to EUR1.14 billion (USD1.395 billion) in 2001.

The report said Jungheinrich maintained its market position despite the steadily weaker (market) development in the summer months. Order intake reached EUR357 million (USD356.8 million) compared to EUR375 million (USD374.8 million) in the third quarter of 2001.

Operating earnings before interest and taxes improved in the third quarter to achieve a return on sales of 4.5 percent, 0.7 percent higher than 2001, the report said. The result, after nine months, improved to EUR44 million (USD43.9 million) compared to EUR49.1 million (USD49.08 million) in 2001.

Net income of EUR10.2 million (USD10.19 million), compared to the 2001 third quarter net profit of EUR6.3 million (USD6.29 million), brought the year-to-date surplus to EUR26.8 million (USD26.78 million), compared to EUR25.6 million (USD25.58 million) in 2001.

Jungheinrich said there was hardly any stimuli for economic development of the materials handling industry in Europe.

The signs point to a decline in the market volume for materials handling equipment by some six percent in Europe. Correspondingly, a lower order intake and lower sales than in the previous year are planned for" the full year 2002, the report said.

For 2003, the company expects to see a slight recovery of the economy with correspondingly positive effects on the development of the market.

2. FILIPINO FORKLIFT INDUSTRY STRUGGLES TO RECOVER
MAKATI CITY, Philippines
The depreciation of the Filipino currency and stiff competition in the market have weakened demand for materials handling in the Philippines.

Most companies are leasing used forklifts instead of buying new units, due to tight budgets, said Philippine Forklift Centre senior vice president Isidro Perez. The centre is Toyotas exclusive distributor for the Philippines.

There are no signs the materials handling market will improve in 2003. (It has been depressed) since the financial crisis in 1997, he said. Companies have a wait-and-see attitude, due to limited budgets.

Some companies had extended their fleet and parts rotations to more than seven years, reflecting the difficult conditions.

Mr Perez said large companies had outsourced logistics, trucking and warehousing operations to the disadvantage of forklift vendors, since we have to negotiate with several firms instead of one company.

With more than 25 forklift brands in the Filipino market, competition was stiff, so only those which offered the best terms for after-sales support and service would survive.

The materials handling industry is overcrowded, and clients are more demanding in terms of pricing, technical support and service, Mr Perez said.

Total industry sales would fall between 400 and 500 forklifts for 2002, far below sales before the 1997 financial crisis, he said.

3. TOYOTA WINS AKCROS FLEET DEAL
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom
Toyota Industrial Equipment (Northern) Ltd has won a contract to supply 17 forklifts to Akcros Chemicals in Eccles, Manchester.

The value of the contract has not been released.

Akcros Chemicals is part of Akzo Nobels Business Unit Functional Chemicals, a world leader in additives for manufacturing and processing PVC.

Toyota Northern sales and marketing director Terry Stephens said Toyota trainers would work with forklift drivers at Akcros.

Were delighted to be supplying Akcros Chemicals with a fleet of forklifts which features the very latest technology from the new, world-beating Generation 7 range, he said.

The contracted fleet includes the engine-powered 7FDF 25, the three-wheeled electric 5FBE 15, and the 7FBRE 16 reach truck.

All the forklifts were fitted with fleet management systems to report to management information such as which operators are using which forklifts, and running times, Mr Stephens said.

7. STOLEN FORKLIFT AN EXPENSIVE TAXI
ABERDEEN, United Kingdom
A drunk man used a stolen forklift as a ride home after a night on the town, a court has heard.

Ronald Leiper, 20, admitted allowing himself to be carried on a stolen forklift on Aberdeen's Victoria Road in August, an Aberdeen Press & Journal report said.

The court heard the forklift was stolen at about 3am on August 16 and, while Mr Leiper did not know the person driving, he decided to hitch a ride.
