WORLD MATERIALS HANDLING MARKET ON THE
UPSWING CLEVELAND, United States The world
materials handling market will increase 6.2 percent a
year to become a USD108 billion industry by 2006,
according to projections in "World Material Handling", a
new study by the Freedonia Group.
The positive
future represented a significant recovery from the
sluggish early 2000s performance, which was impacted by
the global economic slowdown. An improved world economy
would fuel the turnaround, bringing accelerated demand
for goods and creating opportunities for suppliers of
goods-handling products and services, the report
said.
The economic recovery would most benefit
the "mature, cyclical" markets of the industrialised
nations, including the USA, Canada, and Western Europe
and nations in developed Asia/Pacific. Developing
countries would see firming commodity prices and rising
demand for electronics, consumer durables and other
items.
The Freedonia report said the fastest
per-annum growth would occur in Asia/Pacific, where
numerous countries were undergoing rapid
industrialisation and where demand had been suppressed
since the regions financial crisis of 1997-1998.
Eastern Europe would also register above-average growth
in materials handling demand, as consumer and business
markets expanded.
World Material Handling (395
pages) is available for USD4700 from The Freedonia
Group, Inc. For details, contact Corinne Gangloff on

KALMAR ROUGH TERRAIN CONTAINER HANDLERS ARRIVE DOWN
UNDER CANBERRA, Australia The Australian
Army has ordered two Kalmar rough terrain container
handlers, becoming the first non-US military force to
use the machines.
The value of the contract has
not been revealed. The Australian Army would not
comment.
Kalmar has so far delivered more than
130 rough terrain container handlers to the US Army,
with the 100th unit being commissioned in
August.
Developed in close co-operation with the
US Army, the machine is designed to handle containers in
extreme conditions. Based on Kalmars reach stacker
designs, the four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer machines
can operate in mud, sand and up to 1.8 metres of salt
water.
The US Army Tank Automotive and Armaments
Command, which has sole rights to the military version
of the rough terrain container handler, approved the
Australian contract. Kalmar, in a statement, said
several more such deals were expected in the
future.
The US Army contact was signed in April
2000 and is a "requirement type contract" covering
deliveries between 2001 and 2005. The contract is
expected to involve 500 units. The first 16 machines
were delivered to a US Army base in Washington in June
and July last year.
Kalmars rough terrain
container handler series is produced in a military
(RTCH) version and a commercial (RT) version. The
military version is fitted with a moving operators cab
and a folding boom assembly to reduce transport height.
This makes it possible to transport the machine by air,
sea, rail or road without requiring
disassembly.
Marketing and sales of RT machines
in North and South America are handled by Kalmars RT
Centre in Texas. In Europe, sales will begin through a
specially-selected dealer network.

REDUCED EARNINGS FOR CZECH FORKLIFT
MAKER VEJPRTY, Czech Republic Belet
posted sales of KC102 million (USD3.2 million) for the
three quarters to September, down 17 percent from the
same period in 2001.
Gross profit fell 44 percent
to KC3 million (USD95,775) from KC5.3 million
(USD169,200) in 2001, according to a CTK Business News
report.
Belet economic director Petr Nuslauer
said the sales fall was due mainly to floods which
ravaged parts of Europe in August, which saw
third-quarter sales slump by one third on the same
quarter last year.
"In September, we saw interest
in our production rise again, by 40 percent (compared
to) August, and the same trend is continuing (this
month)," he said.
The company employed 100 staff
as at September 30. Exports represent 46 percent of
Belets total output, with the biggest importers being
Italy, Russia, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Great Britain,
the USA and Ukraine. -

MINOR INJURIES FOR FORKLIFT DRIVER WHO HITS CAR,
HOUSE LLANWCHAIARN, United Kingdom A
forklift driver narrowly escaped serious injury when his
forklift rolled off a building site and into a car
before embedding itself in the front porch of a
house.
The driver suffered minor neck injuries,
and no-one in the house was hurt, a Western Mail report
said.
A spokesman for the Newtown fire service,
which attended the scene, said: "The forklift rolled off
the building site and bounced off a Vauxhall Vectra car
before (embedding) itself right in the middle of a
porch."
A spokesman for Wales's Health &
Safety Executive told the Mail the government had not
decided whether an investigation into the accident would
be launched.
