SPANISH MANUFACTURER TARGETS THAILAND BARCELONA, Spain Rough-terrain
forklift maker Automoviles Utilitarios SA (AUSA) says
the Asian economic crisis is receding, and it is ready
to seize the opportunities rapidly becoming available
there through an assault beginning in
Thailand.
AUSA was poised to grow at a
spectacular rate as the Asian economy improved,
according to Thailand sales head Alvaro Noguera. He told
Forkliftaction.com News that an AUSA sales delegation
had signed several agreements with Thai companies, but
would not reveal details.
Mr Noguera said there
was “huge” potential in Thailand, where the gross
domestic product and investment in construction were
increasing rapidly. While AUSA's growth was likely to
come through construction, the company planned to
demonstrate its contribution to other industries. So
far, AUSA’s most popular machines in Thailand were
dumpers in the construction sector, followed by
forklifts.
“Our success in the past decade of
building our market share outside the construction
industry (means) we are prepared to do the same in
(Thailand),” Mr Noguera said.

BRANDT TAKES OVER COAST TRACTOR &
EQUIPMENT REGINA, Canada Brandt Tractor has
bought British Columbia dealer Coast Tractor &
Equipment to become one of the largest privately owned
sellers of John Deere equipment in the
world.
Both companies sell John Deere backhoes,
graders, forklifts and excavators.
The purchase,
finalised this month, includes Coast Tractor &
Equipment’s 14 locations throughout British Columbia and
expands Brandt’s operations into the one part of Western
Canada where it was not previously
represented.
Brandt president Shaun Semple would
not reveal the purchase price in a Regina Leader-Post
article, but said the timing was right for Brandt to buy
into the British Columbia market.
Mr Semple said
the acquisition would boost Brandt’s CAN450 million
(USD288.37 million) annual sales by one third, and add
220 employees to the Brandt group’s 800-strong
workforce.

FORKLIFT STARS IN WORLD RECORD HAM
BISCUIT SMITHFIELD, United States The
world’s largest-ever ham biscuit, to be baked on
September 28, will need to be cut in half by a
forklift.
The biscuit, which will feed 1752
people, will be eight feet (2.4 metres) in diameter,
contain 450 pounds (204 kilograms) of Smithfield ham and
be baked in an oven five feet (1.5 metres) tall, 10 feet
(three metres) deep and 10 feet (three metres)
wide.
Ham biscuits, created by baking cooked ham
pieces combined with biscuit dough, are a traditional
favourite in the USA.
The biscuit is being baked
by Smithfield residents to commemorate the founding of
Smithfield, Virginia, in 1752, and as a celebration of
the district’s pork industry, according to the News
& Observer.

STURDY CAT FORKLIFT CAUSES HEADACHES FOR
COPS YORK, United Kingdom A stolen
Caterpillar forklift left a trail of destruction during
a bizarre police chase last week which ended only when a
“stinger” device was used to blow its tyres.
Six
people, including three police officers, were injured,
and 10 vehicles were damaged during the low-speed chase,
which at its height reached 20 miles an hour (32
kilometres an hour).
A North Yorkshire Police
spokesman told The Scotsman newspaper that a police van
tried to stop the forklift but was deliberately rammed,
causing extensive damage and slightly injuring the
police driver. A passing car was also damaged in the
collision.
“A marked patrol car followed (the
forklift) through the city, where it continued to be
driven erratically, attempting to ram any vehicle which
travelled across its path,” the spokesman
said.
The driver took the forklift the wrong way
down a one-way street and headed out of the city on a
south-bound freeway. It struck a BMW sedan and caused an
accident involving four other vehicles.
It was
not until the forklift was headed west towards Leeds
that police used a “stinger” tyre deflation device,
which successfully damaged one of the Cat’s front tyres.
A police car then rammed the forklift into the freeway’s
central barrier and stopped it.
A man was
arrested and was “helping police with their inquiries”,
the newspaper said.
The police spokesman said
while the chase did not exceed 20 miles an hour, the
rugged design of the Cat forklift caused police “serious
problems”.
