JOBS & RESUMES
Your newsletter this week features a story about a US company employing 140 forklift drivers in response to its booming third-party logistics operation. It's good news for the industry when such growth is apparent. Click this link to go to Forkliftaction.com's Jobs page: http://www.forkliftaction.com/jobs/default.asp. Forkliftaction.com subscribers are welcome to post positions vacant and resumes on this page at no cost. Resumes can be posted anonymously. Correction: Last week's "South of the Border" feature wrongly stated that Expo-Logistica covered more than 20 square kilometres (12.5 square miles). The show actually filled 20,000 square metres (five acres) in the Hipodromo de Las Americas exhibition hall.

1. MLA WINS AUD25 MILLION BHP CONTRACT
------------------------------------------
SYDNEY, Australia
MLA Holdings Pty Ltd will supply 160 forklifts and sideloaders to BHP Steel, Australia's largest steel company, in a five-year, AUD25 million (USD13.78 million) supply and service contract announced this week.
Details are still being finalised, but Forkliftaction.com News has learned that the contract could expand to 200 machines, as other supply contracts terminating in coming months could be joined to the MLA deal.
MLA managing director Ken Rathgen said the contract included 110 Mitsubishi internal combustion forklifts, starting at 1.5-tonne capacities, and "at least" 29 Fantuzzi forklifts and side loaders, from 16-tonne to 45-tonne capacities.
MLA won three-quarters of the total tender, which BHP divided into New Zealand, Port Kembla, Western Port and Rest of Australia. Brambles Industrial Services retained the Port Kembla supply contract, but MLA won the other Australian contracts from Red Australia Equipment Pty Ltd, and the New Zealand contract from Cesco Forklifts.
"MLA's reputable, quality product range, proven stability and excellent national service network were key factors for winning this deal," Mr Rathgen said.
Other tenderers were Linde, Nissan, Toyota, Red Australia, Brambles, Cesco and several other major rental firms.
Neither BHP nor Brambles would comment.

2. JLG DOWNGRADES EARNINGS ESTIMATES
----------------------------------------
McCONNELLSBURG, United States
JLG Industries Inc has revised its full-year July 31 earnings estimates due to "continued uncertainty" in the US.
A JLG statement said fourth-quarter sales were expected to be down 15 percent on 2001. Increased uncertainty and its impact on finance and credit had caused many of JLG's large customers to be cautious in their spending.
"Orders in late June and early July are well below our expectations and pricing is very competitive. While we continue to believe we are at the bottom of the cycle, recovery now appears to be more protracted than projected," said JLG chairman Bill Lasky.
"Unfortunately, this uncertainty comes during (our) seasonally strongest period. The fleet replacement cycle depends on three factors: a clear indication that the economy is on the mend, a healthy used equipment market, and availability of customer financing, all of which are still lacking."
JLG chief financial officer Jim Woodward said aerial platforms had been affected more severely than the telehandlers segment and, while a weaker US dollar favoured JLG's European operations, competitive pricing and restrictive customer credit had offset any benefits.

DSC's 21-hectare complex handles inbound and outbound shipments, warehousing, fulfillment, and transportation for companies including Kellogg's, Georgia-Pacific and Nestle.
DSC chief executive Ann Drake said the 140 positions were for all shifts, and those employed would operate stand-up and sit-down forklifts, slip-sheet and clamp attachments, pallet jacks, and other power equipment for moving, locating, stacking, and counting merchandise.
Ms Drake said the new employees would increase DSC's Allentown workforce by almost 50 percent.

5. FORKLIFT THIEVES STRIKE IN PORTUGAL AND CANADA
-----------------------------------------------------
ABOBODA, Portugal
Organised thieves are believed to be behind two major forklift thefts perpetrated in Portugal and Canada last month.
Eight OM-Pimespo diesel forklifts were stolen from the Aboboda warehouse of Electro Central Vulcanizadora LDA on June 17 after thieves cut security alarm systems and broke in, loading two trucks with the machines and making their escape.
Spokesman Luis Bessa said the D-15, D-20, D-25 and D-30 machines, which were used for the companys short-term rentals, ranged in size from two 1.5-tonne to three-tonne capacities, and had a total value of more than EUR120,000 (USD121,000).
He said the authorities were investigating the theft, but it was likely that the machines had been shipped out of the country, possibly to Senegal.
On the same day in North Hamilton, Canada, two 18-tonne capacity Taylor low mast forklifts (see www.forkliftaction.com for photographs and serial numbers) were discovered missing from Pier 14 of the Port of Hamilton. Police so far had no leads, but the Hamilton Port Authority was hoping to receive information from the public, a spokesman said.
Readers who have any information about these thefts are urged to email info@forkliftaction.com. Forkliftaction.com will provide regular updates about stolen forklifts around the globe in the lead-up to the release of a stolen forklift register, which will be added to the Forkliftaction.com website in the coming months. 6. PATENT PENDING ON HOME-MADE FORKLIFT TRAILER
---------------------------------------------------
BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada
A Canadian company has a patent pending on a new trailer which promises safer, faster handling of forklift and warehouse machinery transport.
Forkliftdelivery.com owner Dan Pecarski said traditional slide-back tow trucks, tilt trailers, double drops and low-beds were hampered by the time taken for winching and chaining, and were limited by high-mast machines.
"What's proven most efficient for us is our tiny but sturdy hydraulic trailer built in our own workshop. Being so low off the ground, we can load stackers, electric pallet jacks and man lifts with no problems," Mr Pecarski said.
The as-yet unnamed trailer has a three-metre deck and can handle most forklifts with capacities of up to three tonnes. Limitations are that the trailer has a maximum payload of 5.5-tonnes, a maximum forklift width of 137cm, and can carry only one forklift at a time.
Mr Pecarski would not say whether the trailer would be offered for general sale.

8. OFFICIALS DESTROY FISHY CONSIGNMENT
------------------------------------------
LAGOS, Nigeria
Nigerian customs officials received a smelly surprise when 2.3 tonnes of rotten fish arrived at Lagos's Michelle Terminal this month.
Seventy-eight 30-kilogram bales of dried fish heads, worth NGN1 million (USD8,247) were destroyed by Nigeria's National Agency for Food & Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) after being deemed unfit for human consumption.
Officials told AllAfrica.com the fish heads' container had been punctured by a container handler, allowing water to enter it. The heads, which were shipped from Iceland, had rotted long before arrival.
Silvermoon Industries, which was responsible for the delivery, allowed the stock to be destroyed immediately, the report said. NAFDAC has appealed to importers to ensure proper handling of containers to avoid spoilage.
