1. CVS FERRARI IN SUPPLY DEAL WITH NEW BRAZILIAN PORT
------------------------------------------------------------------
ROVELETO, Italy -- Heavy lift equipment manufacturer CVS Ferrari has entered a supply agreement with Tecondi, a new container terminal at the port of Santos, Brazil.
CVS will supply six CVS 278 model reach stackers, capable of stacking three layers of 15-tonne, 2.9m containers on the third row, with 60 tonnes under hook; two T3212 32-tonne capacity heavy forklifts able to stack three high and equipped with triplex masts for roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) operations in restricted heights; and two TR3516 heavy-duty terminal tractors.
CVS sales & marketing director Elvio Simonetti said the deliveries began last month, and all equipment was expected to arrive in Brazil by the end of November. The value of the deal was not released.
A CVS subsidiary, CVS Latin America, in Rio de Janeiro, has already supplied to Sepetiba Tecon, another Brazilian port, seven of the 278 model reach stackers, the same as those now being delivered to Tecondi.
CVS will establish a service station at Tecondi to maintain the terminal's equipment and service equipment in transit on board RO/RO vessels.
Meanwhile, Mississippi-based heavy lift truck manufacturer Taylor is expanding its product range through a licensing deal which will see CVS machines, built and branded as Taylors, distributed through the Taylor network in the USA. The machines will be built in Italy. CVS has a similar arrangement with Komatsu. Mr Simonetti said CVS and Taylor would have no problems with conflicting products, as the two companies had no overlapping sales regions.
Mr Simonetti has just relocated to the USA, and been appointed managing director of CVS America Inc, a new division based in Miami, Florida, to service CVS clients in North and South America. He will continue as sales & marketing director. CVS America will distribute the complete range of empty and full container handlers and stackers, and the terminal truck range.
CVS now has branches in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Miami and Rio de Janeiro.
Mr Simonetti is also looking to appoint distributors in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

2. BOLZONI, AURAMO TIE THE KNOT
------------------------------------------------------------------
CASONI DI PODENZANO, Italy -- Forklift attachments manufacturers Bolzoni SpA, of Italy, and Auramo Oy, of Finland, have joined forces to form the second-largest attachments company in the world.
The group was formed on August 3 with Bolzoni's 100% purchase of Auramo, for an undisclosed price. Both were independent, financially strong companies, with non-competing product ranges. The merged company will have an annual turnover of $US72 million, and outlets on all continents.
Auramo chairman Karl-Peter Staack said the merger was made to meet customers' needs. Time was the most limiting factor affecting logistics chains everywhere and, by combining forces, Auramo and Bolzoni would offer a faster, more versatile service and a better support network on all continents.
The two companies will operate as normal, maintaining all staff and locations, but co-operate in production, retail, export and service.
The combined group has seven production plants, 13 branches and 550 employees. The group claims its product range is now the widest in the attachments market.
Bolzoni, founded in 1945, is a lift truck attachment manufacturer and has a profitable presence in the OEM business. Auramo, founded in 1947, is well-known for forest products handling equipment and lift masts, and is the sales leader in the European paper-handling equipment market. The Auramo lines comprise more than 300 pulp and paper-handling attachments, fork positioners, lift-truck masts and palletless-handling systems.

3. LACK OF EQUIPMENT CONGESTS NIGERIAN PORT
------------------------------------------------------------------
LAGOS, Nigeria -- Cargo congestion on the Nigerian waterfront is causing headaches for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the government.
Critics say the problem, believed to have been caused by a 100 per cent cargo inspection rule introduced this year, is compounded by a lack of forklifts, cranes and container-handling equipment.
The Guardian quoted Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents president Alhaji Sanni Shittu as saying ports were "congested even before the directive on the 100 per cent physical examination of containers".
Mr Shittu said there should be at least 34 10-tonne cranes at Apapa Port, but there were currently none. The port also needed 68 2.5-tonne and 51 five to 7-tonne forklifts. However, it had just seven 2.5-tonne and seven 5-tonne machines.
NCS first claimed port facilities were inadequate in May, accusing the NPA of being unable to position containers for examination, due to insufficient cargo-handling equipment. But the NPA said importers and their agents failed to clear consignments for fear of arrest and seizure of illegal goods.

6. ONLINE VENTURE PAYS DIVIDENDS
------------------------------------------------------------------
BRISBANE, Australia -- An online venture for corporate customers to order forklift parts has paid dividends after launching only five months ago.
EMC Forklift Parts, a family business operating in the parts market in Australia and New Zealand, began emcgateway.com to expand its services to customers.
Systems manager Stefan Marschner said the internet served the parts distribution industry well, as customers could submit and track orders, and access personal account information and archived financial statements.
Mr Marschner said take-up of the new service had been "excellent" and the company had gained many new customers. He would not say how much the project had cost to establish, but said the amount outlaid had been recouped, and the venture was "providing good returns".
"A good proportion of our existing customer base is already using the service, and new customers are inquiring every week," he said. "Customers appreciate that, at any time of the day or night, they can log on, check their accounts and do business in their own time."

7. RAYMOND'S NARROW RANGE TURNS 50
------------------------------------------------------------------
GREENE, USA -- Raymond Corporation this week celebrates 50 years of manufacturing narrow-aisle forklifts.
The first truck was built after George Raymond Jr, sales manager of the then Lyon-Raymond Company, was approached by a grocery warehouse consultant who wanted a truck that could lift a pallet two tiers high, but did not need wide aisles like counter-balance trucks.
The project went ahead after a patent was granted on August 14, 1951, and the first narrow-aisle forklift was produced.
