Automation doesn’t start from the machine
A lot of people still think automation is a standard product problem.
But one thing I realized very clearly while talking to customers in the U.S. is that almost no two factories are truly the same.
One customer told me, “Your robots look great, but I’m not sure they fit my factory.” So I asked him why. He explained that their pallet sizes were inconsistent, material dimensions varied a lot, some areas were extremely narrow, some workflows required elevator integration, and others needed conveyor integration.
And then he said something very real. He said the hardest part wasn’t buying a robot. The hardest part was that different areas required completely different robot forms.
And honestly, that’s the reality of automation. Automation is not really a hardware problem. It’s a scenario problem.
The MHI report reflects the same trend. As supply chain complexity increases, companies are shifting from single-purpose automation toward flexible systems that can adapt to different operational environments.
