Vietnam first in Asia to receive Kalmar Zero Emission RTGs

SNP is the first in Asia to operate Kalmar Zero Emission RTGs.
Cargotec has delivered six Kalmar E-One2 rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes with "zero emission" technology to Vietnamese terminal operator Saigon Newport (SNP) and its subsidiaries, Tan Cang Logistics Joint Stock Company and Tan Cang Warehousing Joint Stock Company.

The 6+1 wide and one-over-five high machines were commissioned ahead of schedule by on-site Cargotec technicians. SNP’s cranes receive power through cable reel, and they are the first Kalmar Zero Emission RTGs operating in Asia.

Cargotec boasts that the machine’s environmental and economical advantages include no local emissions, low operating costs and reduced maintenance.

All the cranes will operate at Cat Lai Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City.

"The handover process went smoothly and SNP is very pleased with the performance of the machines. They appreciate the flexibility in running the cranes with shore or power supply, and the innovative on-screen controls systems ensure their safe and efficient operation," says Henry Tan, Cargotec’s director of industrial and terminal business in South and South East Asia.

SNP is Vietnam’s largest container terminal operator. The company handles 80% of the import/export volumes in the Ho Chi Minh City area and nearly 50% nationwide. In 2009, SNP handled 2.4 million TEUs, a 20% increase on the 2 million TEUs it handled in 2008.

Cargotec says the Kalmar Zero Emission E-One2 RTG is its most environmentally friendly model. The machines not only receive mains power but they regenerate energy when lowering loads, supplying the power back to the network so that the customer only pays for the actual energy it consumes.
