Auckland port gains in service shake-up

Ports of Auckland will benefit from the latest round of port rotation rationalisation by overseas shipping lines.

The NZX/NZS consortium of shipping lines has designated the Auckland Port as the key New Zealand import port call after its recent review of its two-loop South East Asia service.

The new rotation, starting in June, will see five larger (nominal 2,500 TEU capacity) vessels operating a weekly service utilised by PIL (Pacific International Lines), OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Lines), MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines), NYK (NYK Line) and MISC (Malaysian International Shipping Corporation).

"This is good news for Auckland and comes on top of the recent Maersk/Hamburg Sud decision to hub their New Zealand import cargo over Auckland," says Ports of Auckland general manager - sales, marketing and logistics, Craig Sain.

Sain adds that since the majority of New Zealand’s import cargo is destined for the Auckland region, it makes sense for this cargo to come direct to the Auckland port.

"Auckland and its ports are at the epicentre of New Zealand’s economy and trade. Most of the country’s import distribution centres are based in Auckland and the region is New Zealand’s second largest export centre (by value).

"So it is pleasing to see that the shipping lines are taking advantage of the benefits of using Auckland as the natural port of discharge for Auckland imports. This provides them with faster transit times to final destination (speed to market) and lower CO2 emitting supply chains (closer to market)," says Sain.
