Cargotec has won an order for one Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) crane and one Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane for JSC NEVA-METAL, a division of OAO Severstal, operating at the port of St. Petersburg.

This will be Cargotec's first STS crane in Russia. The contract was signed the second quarter of this year and the cranes are scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2012. The order value is confidential.

NEVA-METAL specialises in handling container and general cargo arriving by sea, rail and road. With global cargo volumes on the rise, the company decided to invest in Kalmar container handling equipment to maximise its terminal productivity while keeping its costs down.

The Russian stevedore opted for a Kalmar STS crane capable of serving Panamax vessels in a twin-lift operation with a 36-metre outreach, 16-metre backreach and 28-metre hoisting height.

Cargotec says the unit will feature "optimised hoisting speeds that deliver accuracy and efficiency with very little energy consumption". The crane will operate without hydraulics, requiring less time for maintenance and eliminating the potential for oil leakages.

NEVA-METAL general director Mikhail Panov says the support the company has received from Cargotec's local organisation for its reach stackers and forklifts has been prompt and professional.

"This gave us the confidence to invest in Kalmar cranes featuring reliable, fuel efficient technologies which is leading in the industry," Panov explains.

NEVA-METAL's Kalmar STS crane will feature an onboard electrical power generation set, enabling regenerative energy flows. Due to the crane's innovative design, the diesel power generator is very small compared to traditional diesel-powered STS cranes, resulting in significantly less fuel usage.
