APM Terminals Elizabeth, a container terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey, has placed an order for 34 electric rubber-tyre gantry (RTG) cranes, as it continues to undertake a modernisation program at the site.

The agreement, with Konecranes, includes an option for an additional six units.

APM Terminals Elizabeth is a 350-acre container terminal owned by Netherlands-headquartered port and container terminal operator APM Terminals. It is the largest APM terminal on the US east coast and is a primary gateway for global trade.

The RTGs are fully powered by onboard battery packs and, Konecranes says, the delivery is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

The E-RTGs will be deployed across the terminal yard to support container handling operations and will help prepare the terminal for future operational requirements.
