UK equipment distributor Aprolis Equipment Distribution has successfully deployed a reach stacker as part of a major waste collection operation from the River Thames.

A story published by Multimodal states that the Konecranes SMV 4646 TCX4 reach stacker is purpose-built for barge handling operations and designed specifically for difficult port and inland waterway applications.

The reach stacker will handle waste containers which are transported to a recycling facility in Barking, London, where it will work alongside the site's existing ship-to-shore crane to help provide around-the-clock operational support.

Aprolis says the reach stacker has a 10m outreach, a lift capacity of 37T, and features a unique negative lift capability, allowing it to reach up to 4m quay level.

The River Thames is among the world’s highest tidal ranges with water levels fluctuating by as much as 7m in just six hours in some spots.

Konecranes engineered the reach stacker to maintain safe and precise handling performance across the Thames' constantly changing water levels. Extensive design planning was also required to ensure the reach stacker could access barges from a carefully designated parking position on the wharf.

Because the reach stacker weighs 113T, engines needed to account for concrete pilings beneath the wharf.

A 100T crane, specialist lifting bars, a 16T forklift, cherry picker and two Aprolis engineers were required to complete the assembly of the machine when it arrived on site.
