Discussion:
presence switch locaton

Let me preface this that I am not a forklift mechanic. I own a Crown RC5545-40. Recently it has just stopped working. When you turn the key on in it it does nothing. I was told it is most likely a "presence switch issue". I was told that it is under the floorboard but I can not remove the floorboard as it is "trapped in place". Where is this switch located and can it be jumped ou to work all the time. I do have some basic mechanical skills. If someone points me in the direction of the switch and how to remove the floorboard I can probably fix it. Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

I do realize that there is a calibration procedure. I have done it. I also do know the password. I installed new brake switch, recalibrated and all is good now. Thanks for all the help.

There's a calibration procedure you have to do to stop the error code 319. Just for the brake switch, as well as the brake potentiometer on the pedal. Otherwise it will error 319 and won't move. Send me your email and I'll send you the procedure.

I finally got a chance to work on this forklift. Replaced all 3 of the presence switches. Got it to work ok. I have always had an issue with code 319. (brake switch issue). Found the switch rusted and sometimes sticking. WD40 did not come to my rescue. Just ordered a new switch and 2 new screws. This should be the end of the issue. hanks for the response and good help. Till next time.

So. If you hold the key in the start position, does the display light up? As I mean hold it there do not release it. Or does it not light up? Then if nothing again check battery voltage, connectors on battery. If all good. You have to check fuses underneath the left cover by the tiller wheel. The distribution board. 3 buss fuses. Also replace the keyswitch. Make sure your battery is good. No corrosion on cables. Have seen swelled cables do this. Corrosion inside of them causes low power to unit to start. Many things can cause this issue. It's not fun

By doing nothing I mean that it will not work. After key is on it normally used to work several seconds later. Now it just tells you to cycle key switch again and or step on the floor which I am doing. I did speak to a tech (a very quick cinversation in passing) that said there are 3 switches (all identical) under the floor board. Now I just need to know hot to get the darn thing off.

Just a side note to add onto the reply below:

You can not jump the presence or brake switches as they require a self test where the module sees the switches in both the opened and closed state. That is the reason you have to cycle your feet when you first turn on the truck.

But if the display does not turn on with the key, then you have a completely diffrent issue than the presence switches, like stated below:

Need some clarification of it does nothing? When you turn the key on does the display light up if the display does not light up you need to read battery voltage at the battery make sure your connector is in good condition. If the display lights up, can you read battery voltage on what we call BDI green orange what is it. We then need to make sure our fuses are good, which would be under the cover by the tiller handle. There is a small cover in the upper right corner with four screws. We have to takeoff and inspect three bus fuses. Also, there is a black if not clear relay which is rectangular to make sure that is pushed in and all connectors are pushed in to what is called the distribution board. This is the power up of the forklift after the key. Again, clarify if the display comes on or is it blank nothing
