I myself know nothing about the UK safety standard.But l will tell you that an accident can happen anytime and anywhere that why it's called an accident.You will never stop every accident because we are not robots.l will tell you what l know how to help cut them down.First l been a forklift tech in the shop and road for forty years also worked in the crane industrial for twenty years still working at present time.so big dealers try to avoid an accident at any cost they hire a deacated safety team that makes sure that the tech on the road has all safety equipment on board.what l mean is he or she has the correct shoes clothing safety glasses and harness tether wheel chocks cones vest and so on.When the tech gets to the job site he or she must make sure that there is nothing that would cause them to get hurt on the floor were they will work.If possible move yo a spot were there is no one around.l believe that most accident happen from other drives not seeing the tech or hitting into him or her. The safety team will randomly go to the job site to make sure the tech has set up everything for safety before working on truck.If not can be terminated on the spot.ln the crane world what l seen is they have safety meeting about every six months were they bring tech and drives to a hall and bring in guest speaker that have been in the field and insurance agents to talk about safety they will show films of cases were someone got hurt and ask if the tech could tell what went wrong.After the meeting anyone who attended will get a certificate stating that they attended the meeting. lunch or dinner is served at the meeting. i was once testing an electric pallet, and i was testing the emergency opressed man switch which is located at the front of the timon, so i turn the traction backwards, and i press the switch, because it was faulty it didnt make the machine stop and it almost crushed my toes against a wall, my metal security shoes saved my toes otherwise it would have turned out as smashed meat

After over 45 years as a tech I have had some close calls and have known several techs that had some close calls and have been injured by truck drivers ,lift operators and just customers employees and the tech not paying attention causing injury and limb loss
One of our techs was working in a " secure area " and was replacing a starter on a lift when an operator driving with an extra tall load and driving forward ran into lift pushing it through a wall the tech was lucky enough to have seen him and got from under lift just as the other lift hit it. I myself was checking an over heating issue and had the hood up looking for leak while unit running , the owner of the company came up and was looking also and the next thing I know he said I think it's leaking and then I heard a loud noise he had gone to point at the lower radiator hose and put his hand in fan blade it took 3 of his fingers
It was an older Clark that had a metal blade
My point is not only the tech but anyone around you can cause an accident be alert of your safety as well as others lift trucks are more dangerous than most realize especially when doing repairs please stay safe
