BERKSHIRE, United Kingdom -- Barlow Handling Limited has secured a UK(pounds) 76 million contract to provide output-based materials handling services for Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Through the MoD's Public Private Partnership Program, Barlow will provide, maintain, service and replace forklift trucks and other handling equipment that the MoD requires to move stores at military units.
UK Armed Forces Minister John Spellar said the 10-year contract meant a better service for the front line and money that could be spent directlyon front-line capability.
"This contract means we will be injecting efficient commercial practices into the management of our materials handling fleet," he said.
"The fighting capability of the armed forces is only as good as the support it receives, and it is important that we examine every means of improving that service, including seeking the very best solutions the industry has to offer."
The contract is for the outsourced fleet management of 2633 commercial lift trucks and associated equipment in 585 MoD establishments.
The deal will see the purchase of the existing fleet, service and repair provisions and a supporting management information system to assist in achieving a significant reduction of the total fleet over the term of the contract.
Barlow chairman Ken Brown said the contract set a precedent for other logistics operations to follow.

"We look forward to ensuring that our forces are provided with an efficient, value-for-money materials handling service."
Barlow is the world's largest distributor of Hyster lift trucks, offering new and used machines, parts and service, short-term hire and outsourced fleet management services throughout the USA, UK, and Belgium.
