Nissan 40 Forward Only

Hello,

I have a customer who has a 40 Series Nissan lift (LP Engine). It will only go forward. Neutral and reverse selections are still forward, and reverse (as the customer claims) is attainable by putting in reverse, and mashing the gas and it will start to go backwards.

I thought, silly me, that it might be a linkage issue...I checked the selector linkage. It's fine. I took it off the selector on the transmission and tried it: detent was strong, but no difference. I checked the clutch linkage and it was fine.

I checked the fluid. It's fine too. Or do you have to check the fluid on a lift while it's running in Neutral? Oh, that won't work, this thing is stuck in forward...

Ok, what should I check now? Thanks in advance for your help.

the insides of the transmission, by checking the fluid pressures. you may well have a hung up clutch pack.

I've come across 2 trucks that had this problem, a TCM and a Toyota. The Toyota overheated and warpped the forward clutch pack. That kept it engaged all the time. The TCM had a cracked steel plate in the forward clutch pack that came apart and lodged in the pack jamming it. Putting it in reverse and full throttle would make it try to go backwards a little. One easy test is to drain all the fluid so you have no pressure and if it still wants to go forward the clutch pack must come out.

Is there somewhere online I might be able to find a service manual for one of these critters? What kind of fluid does this lift take?

I can rebuild C-6's, Turbo 350's and TorqFlights, with the book, of course, but I've never got into a lift tranny...probably a whole different ball game, huh?

I am starting to think that they may have to have this one hauled in for a rebuild. I hate to give the business away, but I'd rather the customer get what's needed the first time, and the customer know that when I reach the edge of the realm of my knowledge, I'm humble enough to say, "I don't know. I recommend that you have a specialist look at this."

other than the housing pretty much transmissions work the same way
the lift trannies are actually simpler since they only have a fwd and rev gear (some bigger ones have 2nd and 3rd your 40 may have a 2 speed)

those 40 nissans are built by MCFA right ed?

one my customers just gave me a letter he got from mitsu about an issue with the smaller nissan built mitsus with a similar problem
though this may not relate to yours

"the mitsu by reference... blah blah, may experience a fatigue failure of the Belleville spring, an internal transmission component designed to reduce trans engagement shock. If this was to occur, it may cause the vehicle to continue to travel in the mechanically engaged gear even though the lever is in neutral"

obviously my customers is handled through a safety recall for free by mitsu regardless of warranty status ( this particular unit is an 04 and is well out of its warranty even on emissions) to prevent gigantic lawsuits from guys driving off docks due to mechanical failure

post the serial number and full model number of the machine
(or at least the prefix of the s#)

The model is:
Variance: UJ02A20PV1
Chassis: UJ02-9J0230

These were the only numbers I could find on the ID plate. Is the somewhere else that there might be a vin number or a proper serial number?
